Job summary

Cain Watters & Associates is seeking a Business Intelligence Specialist/Developer to design, build, and maintain BI solutions using Power BI and Microsoft Fabric. The role focuses on semantic modeling, dashboards, and AI-enabled data experiences while ensuring data accuracy, governance, and scalable solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field.
  • 3+ years of BI, reporting, or analytics development experience.
  • Strong experience with Power BI (Desktop and Service), including DAX, Power Query, M, and data modeling.
  • Familiarity with SQL and data warehouses/lakehouses.
  • Experience translating business requirements into reporting/analytics solutions.
  • Understanding of data governance, data quality, and reporting best practices.
  • PL-300 certification.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI semantic models, reports, and dashboards.
  • Create semantic models with measures, calculations, and relationships using DAX, M, and Power Query.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineer to consume curated data from Fabric lakehouse/warehouse layers.
  • Translate business requirements into KPIs, metrics, and dashboards.
  • Perform data validation and reconciliation to ensure accuracy.
  • Optimize report performance and refresh strategies.
  • Manage Power BI workspaces, apps, and deployments with security and DEV/Test/Prod separation.
  • Train end users on Power BI tools and self-service capabilities.
  • Maintain documentation for datasets, reports, and standards.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and governance improvements.
  • Support governance initiatives and BI standards across the organization.
  • Design data agents and AI-enabled experiences (Copilot, Fabric Data Agents) and promote governed data products.

Summary/Objective

Reporting to the IT Manager, Data & Analytics, the Business Intelligence Specialist/Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining business intelligence solutions that transform curated data into meaningful insights and AI-enabled decision support. This role focuses on building semantic models, solutions, dashboards, and intelligent data experiences within Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, ensuring that data is accessible, accurate, governed, and aligned with business needs. This role will help enable business users to adopt natural-language analytics, automation, and AI-assisted workflows while supporting internal, client-facing, and vendor-facing technology solutions that are critical to business operations and growth.

Essential Functions
  1. Design, develop, and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards, and applications that deliver actionable insights to business stakeholders.
  2. Develop and manage enterprise semantic models and datasets to ensure consistency, accuracy, and reusability across reporting solutions.
  3. Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into effective data visualizations and analytical solutions.
  4. Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and usability of reporting outputs through data validation, testing, and ongoing maintenance.
  5. Optimize performance, usability, and scalability of Power BI solutions, ensuring efficient report execution and end-user experience.
  6. Develop and support AI-enabled data experiences, including data agents, natural-language analytics, and automation capabilities that help move employees toward agentic ways of working.
  7. Partner with internal teams to build and maintain business-critical technology solutions that support client and vendor engagement, operational visibility, and scalable service delivery.
Responsibilities & Duties
  1. Design and build Power BI semantic models, reports, and dashboards, using Power BI Desktop and Fabric.
  2. Create and maintain semantic models, including measures, calculations, and relationships using DAX, M, and Power Query.
  3. Collaborate with Data Engineer to consume curated data from Fabric lakehouse/warehouse layers and ensure alignment with business logic.
  4. Translate business requirements into functional reporting solutions, including KPIs, metrics, and dashboards.
  5. Perform data validation and reconciliation to ensure reports are accurate and aligned with source systems.
  6. Optimize report and dataset performance, including model design, query efficiency, and refresh strategies.
  7. Manage Power BI workspaces, apps, and deployments, including security, access control, and environment separation (Dev/Test/Prod) through deployment pipelines.
  8. Support and train end users and business teams on Power BI tools, reports, and self-service capabilities.
  9. Develop and maintain documentation for datasets, reports, and reporting standards.
  10. Partner with business stakeholders to identify opportunities for improved reporting, automation, and insights.
  11. Support governance initiatives, including dataset certification, naming standards, and report lifecycle management.
  12. Contribute to continuous improvement of BI standards, templates, and best practices across the organization.
  13. Design, develop, and maintain data agents and intelligent data experiences that enable users to interact with data through natural language, automation, and AI-assisted insights (e.g., Copilot, Fabric Data Agents, and similar technologies).
  14. Guide business users toward agentic enterprise practices by identifying opportunities where AI agents, copilots, automated workflows, and governed data products can improve productivity, decision-making, and adoption of self-service analytics.
  15. Design BI and data solutions that can be safely integrated into client-facing and vendor-facing technology experiences, ensuring usability, reliability, security, and alignment with business objectives.
  16. Collaborate with application, infrastructure, business, client service, and vendor management teams to ensure analytics and intelligent automation solutions support end-to-end business processes and external stakeholder needs.

Education & Experience
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Business Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

Preferred
  • Experience working with Microsoft Fabric and enterprise semantic models.
  • Familiarity with lakehouse architecture and consuming curated data (bronze/silver/gold concepts).
  • Experience with Power Platform tools (Copilot Studio, Power Automate, Power Apps).
  • Experience with data governance and cataloging tools (e.g., Microsoft Purview).
  • Experience working in regulated environments (e.g., PCI, financial services).
  • Experience designing or supporting AI-enabled, client-facing, vendor-facing, or enterprise workflow solutions that require strong governance, usability, and cross-functional adoption.
Travel

Minimal travel expected; occasional travel may be required based on project needs.

Work Environment

This job operates in a clerical, office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing may be required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.

Position Type & Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed based on management’s approval.

Minimum: $107,000.00 - Maximum: $130,000.00 USD
