Job description

What You'll Do

Avalara is seeking a business-savvy, action-oriented, and technically curious Business Intelligence Analyst to join the Global Analytics and Insights team. In this role, you will be responsible for providing analytical insights and recommendations that enable best practices in customer lifecycle management. You will provide exceptional analytical insights that form the basis of GTM strategy, develop scalable models, and drive new acquisitions, product, and channel decisions.

We're looking for someone who combines a deep understanding of business concepts, statistics, and exploratory data analysis with fluency in modern AI tools - someone who uses AI not just to work faster, but to uncover insights, automate repetitive analysis, and free up time for higher-value strategic thinking. By combining these skills, you will uncover actionable insights and catalyze change for Avalara's customers.

This rare opportunity involves creative freedom in generating insights, stakeholder management across multiple global teams, and direct influence on our roadmap. This highly visible role will make a significant contribution to the growth of our business.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

As a member of the analytics team, you will:

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data from various sources to identify trends, patterns, and insights relevant to business objectives
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis to support decision-making, solve business problems, and drive operational efficiencies
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand their data needs and translate requirements into analytical solutions
  • Conduct data validation and quality assurance to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reliability of reports and analysis
  • Work cross-functionally with Marketing, Strategy, and Customer Success teams on Sales and Marketing programs and initiatives; make clear, coherent, and holistic recommendations based on test results
  • Provide analytical deep-dives, monitor and optimize performance across multiple business units
  • Design and execute testing strategies for improving individual performance across channels
  • Integrate data from all 3rd party sources and develop machine learning algorithms to build propensity and value models for different products and geographies
  • Go beyond descriptive reporting - synthesize disparate data points into a clear narrative and point of view that drives action, not just a dashboard that describes what happened
  • Leverage AI tools (e.g., LLM-based assistants, Claude) to accelerate exploratory analysis, summarize findings, and draft first-pass narratives and recommendations for stakeholder review
  • Identify repetitive, manual reporting and data-prep workflows and automate them using AI-powered tools, scripts, or agentic workflows - reducing turnaround time from days to hours
  • Build and maintain lightweight AI-assisted workflows (e.g., prompt-driven data pulls, automated anomaly detection and alerting, AI-generated executive summaries) that scale insight delivery across the business
  • Stay current on emerging AI/analytics tooling and proactively recommend where automation or AI can improve the speed, quality, or scale of the team's analytical output
What You’ll Need To Be Successful
Requirements
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience in analyzing large, multi-dimensional data sets and synthesizing data insights into actionable recommendations
  • Data-driven mindset with a degree in a quantitative discipline such as Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or Mathematics
  • Fluent in SQL and Excel; experience with visualization tools such as Power BI and building statistical models preferred
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or similar) for data analysis, summarization, or workflow automation - not just as a novelty, but as a core part of how you work
  • Working knowledge of how to automate recurring reporting or data workflows using AI/scripting (e.g., Python, low-code automation platforms, or AI agents) preferred
  • Comfort with prompt engineering and evaluating AI-generated output critically - knowing when to trust it, when to verify it, and when to do it yourself
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to influence cross-functional teams
  • A bias toward insight over output - you're as comfortable challenging a stakeholder's question as you are answering it, and you default to "what should we do about this" rather than stopping at "here's what the data shows"
  • Above all, comfort with data - the ability to manipulate it, question its validity, interpret it, and develop recommendations based on it
