BUS MONITOR SUBS

  • Morning, Mid-day and Afternoon Runs

General Description of Duties:

Under the direct supervision of the Superintendent/Designee, the purpose of the position is to perform district-based duties associated with the functions necessary for the transportation of students. Bus monitors may also be used in a temporary assignment to include the transportation of those with various degrees of disabilities. Employees in this position must function at an experienced level equal or greater to those required as described in the Johnston Public Schools Transportation Training and Reference Manual (available at Johnston Public Schools Administration Office).

Minimum Education/Training Experience/License Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED with additional education/credentials as may be required for this position.
  • Attendance at Transportation Annual Training.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Balancing: Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching or running on narrow, slippery surfaces unassisted by persons or device.
  • Stooping: Bending the body downward and forward by bending at the spine at the waist.
  • Crouching: Bending the legs at the knees to come to rest on the knee or knees.
  • Reaching: Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with hand or hands.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken works.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds by the air.
  • Tasting/Smelling: Distinguishing, with a degree of accuracy, differences in similarities in intensity or quality of flavors and/or odors, using tongue or nose.
  • Far Acuity: Clarity of vision at twenty (20) feet or more.
  • Depth Perception: Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they really are.
  • Field of Vision: Observing an area that can be seen up and down or right to left when eyes are fixed on a given point.

Reasoning:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Deal with and resolve variables associated in or from standardized situations.

Language:

  • Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing.
  • Reading: Read and understand directions and looking up unfamiliar words for meaning, spelling and pronunciation.
  • Writing: Write compound and complex sentences.
  • Speaking: Speak clearly and distinctly.

Aptitudes:

  • Intelligence: Average general learning ability. Ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Verbal: Average ability to understand meanings of words and ideas associated with them, and to use them effectively.
  • Numerical: Average ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate eyes and hands or fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements. The ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Color Discrimination: Ability to perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors, or in shades or other values of the same color or to identify a particular color.
