Job summary

Delta Health Alliance, Inc. is seeking a Head Start Bus Driver to provide safe transportation for preschool children. You will operate a 20+ passenger bus, observe health and safety, and maintain daily sign-on sheets.

Responsibilities include transporting children to Head Start centers, ensuring seat belts, completing pre/post-trip checks, coordinating paperwork with families and sites, and collaborating with staff to design efficient routes while protecting every child’s safety and well-being.

Qualifications

• Requires a valid CDL Class B license with driving record free of moving violations in the last 3 years.
• Passenger & School Bus Driver endorsements desirable at hire; required for continued employment.
• Pediatric CPR/First Aid certification at hire or within 30 days.
• Background check via Central Registry and Drug Screen required.
• Bus safety and preschool child handling knowledge gained by school or preschool experience.
• Ability to maintain schedules while meeting children and family needs.

Responsibilities

• Transport children to and from Head Start centers safely and efficiently.
• Ensure seat belts or appropriate car seats are used and belted.
• Address behavioral issues to maintain safety on the bus.
• Complete daily sign-on/sign-off sheets, accounting for each child by name.
• Deliver each child to a responsible adult on the authorized list.
• Prevent leaving any child unattended; follow safety procedures.
• Visually check health status of children on the bus.
• Coordinate paperwork flow between homes and Head Start sites.
• Collaborate with site staff, families, and transportation managers to design routes.
• Perform daily pre/post trip safety checks and keep bus interior/exterior clean.
• Report repairs needed and arrange bus servicing; record mileage and fuel use.

The Head Start/Early Head Start Bus Driver provides safe bus transportation for all children in the program.

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B minimum and driving record free of any moving violations within the last three years.
• Passenger & School Bus Driver's License endorsements desirable at time of hire, required for continued employment.
• Pediatric CPR/First Aid certified at time of hire or achieve certification within 30 days from date of hire.
• Employment conditional upon results of the following:
• Enrollment in Child Care Division- Central Background Registry
• Drug Screen
• Bus Driver Physical Examination and Physical Capacity Examination
• Working knowledge of the behaviors and developmental stages of pre-school children, typically gained by working one year or more in a school or preschool setting.
• Knowledge of safety practices as they relate to pre-school children.
• Good written and oral communications skills and basic math skills.
• Ability to maintain schedules while meeting individual needs of children and families.
• Physical capability, strength, and coordination adequate to drive a 20 and up passenger bus.
• Ability to visually assess the health and behaviors of children.
• Intermediate level decisions needed to adhere to safety and scheduling considerations.

Responsibilities

• Transport children to and from Head Start centers efficiently and safely.
• Ensure that all passengers wear seat belts or are placed in appropriate (age or weight) car seats and belted in.
• Ensure that any behavioral issues do not compromise the safety of any child on the bus.
• Perform daily sign on & sign off sheets, accounting by name all children getting on and off the bus.
• Ensure that each child is delivered to the care of a responsible adult upon leaving the bus (on the authorized list).
• Ensure that no child is left unattended while on the bus, following all procedures put in place to prevent a child being left behind.
• Visually observe the health of each child on the bus.
• Coordinate the paperwork flow between homes and Head Start sites.
• Continuous collaboration with site staff, families, and transportation managers to design efficient bus routes, mail/message deliveries and staffing
• Perform a complete visual safety check of each bus driven on a daily basis, completing daily pre and post trip checklists.
• Keep the interior of the bus clean daily, and bus exterior as needed.
• Report on any repairs needed and deliver bus to repair site.
• Record mileage and gas.
