Parents And Children Together in Honolulu, HI seeks an Early Head Start/Head Start Bus Driver. This part-time, non-exempt role covers 20 hours weekly, Monday through Friday, 7:00–4:30 with scheduling by the Supervisor.

The position emphasizes safety, reliable transportation for children and families in federally funded programs, and adherence to state and federal regulations. The driver will maintain buses, perform pre/post trip checks, ensure child safety belts, and support program operations.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 1 year of experience operating large or commercial passenger vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Transport children, families, and staff to and from EHS/HS classrooms and centers safely.
  • Ensure proper seating and use of seat belts or harnesses.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and report issues.
  • Maintain clean and safe bus/vehicles in compliance with regulations.
  • Coordinate with supervisor and management team on schedules and maintenance.

Job Title:Early Head Start/Head Start Bus Driver

Job Type: Part Time, Non-Exempt

Work Hours: 20 hours per week generally, between the hours of 7:00 - 4:30 Monday through Friday. Work hours will be scheduled with the Supervisor.

Federally funded initiatives provide early childhood education and related comprehensive services for low-income parents and children, and children with special needs. Early Head Start (EHS) provides services in centers and in homes to prenatal parents and parents with infants and toddlers. Head Start (HS) serves children ages three through five and their parents to provide a head start for school success.

The Early Head Start / Head Start Bus Driver and Custodian provides quality transportation for children and families enrolled in the program with a focus on safety and client satisfaction. The EHS/HS Bus Driver and Custodian will also ensure proper maintenance of the bus and other agency owned vehicles as assigned and in accordance with all state, federal, and EHS/HS regulations and guidelines pertaining to child and family transportation. This position will report directly to the Support Services Supervisor.

1. Behaves in a manner that supports the agency's mission and follows personnel policies and procedures.

2. Transport children, families, and staff to and from EHS/HS classrooms and centers, socialization, field trips, and other program related activities in a safe, efficient, and timely manner to include children with disabilities. Assists passengers with boarding and disembarking in a safe and supportive manner.

3. Assure children and all passengers including children with disabilities are seated properly in their seat belts and/or harnesses while being transported and conducts child/passenger count at the start and destination to prevent children from being left behind.

4. Maintain a healthy, safe, and orderly environment on the bus and adheres to all local, state, and federal traffic laws and regulations pertaining to child and family transportation.

5. Performs pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections as required, monthly evacuation drills, reports safety and maintenance concerns, and maintains regular communication with their supervisor and/or assigned EHS/HS Management Team member prior to and following pick-ups and drop-offs.

6. Ensure the serviceability and cleanliness of school buses and program vehicles which includes, but is not limited to, inspection for mechanical defects, fueling, and cleaning of interior and exterior of buses by all appropriate means.

7. Report needed repairs of buses, program vehicles, and equipment to the assigned Supervisor to ensure all are in a safe working condition. Works in collaboration with the EHS/HS management team to secure necessary maintenance and repairs.

8. Efficiently manage and complete assigned tasks and errands as assigned by the supervisor to include but not limited to vehicle safety and registration appointments, supply pick up and deliveries, and interoffice mail delivery and pick up as needed.

Required Education / Training:

1. Must be 18 years of age or older, required.

2. High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.

3. At least one (1) year experience in the operation of large and/or commercial passenger vehicles, or equivalent, required.

Other:

1. Must be 18 years of age minimum.

2. Must possess a valid Driver’s license issued by the Hawaii State Department of Motor Vehicles

3. Must possess a Commercials Driver’s License (CDL) under DOT class standards, including Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, to operate a commercial vehicle at time of hire and renewed upon expiration for continued employment.

4. Can successfully complete a DOT medical examination certificate and required pre-employment drug testing for commercial driver fitness determination as requested and upon hire.

5. Possesses proof of no-fault insurance.

6. Can obtain an acceptable driver's abstract annually and upon hire.

7. Can obtain an acceptable FBI background check.

8. Can obtain an acceptable CPS child abuse registry check.

9. Has been tested and is negative for Tuberculosis no older than 12 months prior to employment.
