Terms of Employment: 10 Months / As needed

Salary: Pay Grade - Regular Bus Driver $17.95/Hourly; Bus Substitute $16.72/Hourly

General Statement of Job

An employee in this class operates a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedule(s) to provide safe and efficient transportation that is time and cost effective, reliable, orderly, and that generates public confidence and respect. Work involves performing pre- and post-trip inspections, obeying all traffic laws and school bus regulations, maintaining discipline, and securing the bus after each run. The employee must exercise tact with parents/guardians and school personnel, adapt to changes in the work schedule, and may face hazards such as heavy traffic, noise, and chemicals. Work is evaluated by safety, efficiency, and quality of operation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and documents inspections as required. Reports mechanical defects or failures daily.
Operates the assigned school bus on the route(s) and schedule provided.
Reports route changes to Bus Coordinators and supervisors as needed.
Obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus.
Observes safety regulations and evacuates students quickly in an emergency.
Maintains discipline and implements a discipline plan aligned with school objectives.
Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
Discharges students only at authorized school or bus stop locations and transports only authorized students.
Keeps the bus clean; reports accidents as required and remains at the scene until released.
Completes all required reports, including accident or incident reports.
Secures the bus after a run or route and ensures doors/windows are secure.
Shuttles buses between schools and the maintenance shop.
Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school with experience driving large vehicles; transporting humans preferred, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
Valid North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with both P (passenger) and S (school bus) endorsements.
Knowledge of safe and efficient practices for operating a school bus, traffic laws, and safety regulations.
Ability to inspect the bus, detect and report mechanical defects, maintain discipline, and keep the bus clean.
Ability to complete required records and follow oral and written instructions; exercise independent judgment and initiative; establish effective working relationships.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be physically able to operate a school bus, including emergency braking and rapid steering adjustments. Must be able to exit the bus in an emergency and assist passengers. Requires ability to perform basic life functions and exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
