Purpose
The purpose of the School Bus Driver is to transport students to and from designated pickup points, including regular route and designated field trip destinations. A regular work schedule typically includes a split shift with both an early morning and afternoon route. This may vary in the afternoon when the School calendar dictates an abbreviated school schedule.
Essential Job Functions
- Operate a school bus safely, assessing traffic and road conditions, monitoring student behavior, and adhering to laws and policies. Drivers will be evaluated annually on driving and student management skills.
- Communicate professionally with students, parents, staff, and others.
- Make authorized stops, transport only authorized passengers, and follow assigned routes, which may change at the school's discretion.
- Report route changes and hazards to the appropriate staff via two-way radio.
- Perform daily pre-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety, including maintaining safety equipment and seatbelts. Annual evaluations will be conducted on inspections.
- Report vehicle defects and maintenance needs to mechanics.
- Conduct post-trip inspections to check for vandalism, lost items, or sleeping students.
- Ensure student safety during entry and exit, activating amber lights and stop arms as required, and only opening doors when safe.
- Follow safety procedures at railroad crossings, keeping bus doors open while crossing.
- Instruct students to buckle seatbelts and remain seated.
- Maintain order and discipline, reporting misconduct incidents.
- Keep the bus environment clean and sanitary, regulating ventilation and air conditioning.
- Attend meetings, complete CPR/First Aid certification, physical exams, and compliance training.
- Maintain records such as inspection forms, mileage sheets, and attendance.
- Report traffic violations or accidents immediately.
- Ensure the bus engine is off and keys are in hand when leaving the seat.
- Assist in emergencies, reporting immediately and completing necessary forms.
- Maintain a professional appearance, refrain from tobacco, and follow school policies on drugs and language.
- Follow routes without unnecessary delays or detours.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least 3 years of experience as a school bus driver.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and caution while driving.
- Proficiency in English reading, writing, and speaking.
- Knowledge of and adherence to basic directions.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and school endorsements.
- CPR/First Aid certification.
