SCHOOL BUS DRIVER


Job Summary:


The job of School Bus Driver is done for the purpose/s of transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.


Essential Functions:



  • Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing regulations and maintaining passenger safety.

  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving and/or recommending a resolution to the situation.

  • Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

  • Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.

  • Attends meetings, classroom and behind the wheel training, safety meetings, etc. for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting the certificate requirement/s of a school bus driver.

  • Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle.

  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills for the purpose of ensuring efficiency of procedures and complying with mandated requirements.

  • Drives school bus/s for the purpose of transporting passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.

  • Drives thru fuel line for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition (e.g. oil, water, fuel, etc.).

  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, mirrors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and complying with mandated guidelines.

  • Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel.

  • Responds to inquiries (e.g. students, parents, other school personnel, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction.

  • Supervises students and other passengers during transit for the purpose of maintaining safety and following district policy.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:


Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)


Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and operating equipment used in transporting students i.e. large and small buses, vans, etc.


Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures; motor vehicle code sections on student transportation; city streets and locations.


Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; and working as part of a team.


Physical Requirements:



  • Ability to enter and exit the bus safely multiple times per day, including climbing and descending steps.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating the bus and maintain focus during driving.

  • Ability to grasp and operate steering wheel, gear shift, and other vehicle controls; ability to perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections using hands and fingers.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, and kneel during inspections and when securing wheelchairs or assisting students.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move safety equipment, student belongings, or assistance devices.

  • Ability to apply sufficient force to operate vehicle controls, including brakes and steering, and assist students as needed.

  • Must meet state vision requirements for commercial drivers, including peripheral vision and depth perception, and be able to read traffic signs and student rosters.

  • Must meet state hearing requirements for commercial drivers to detect horns, sirens, and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to work in and around a school bus in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) and tolerate moderate to high noise levels from traffic and student passengers.

  • Ability to maintain alertness and attention for extended periods while driving and supervising students on the bus.

  • Ability to evacuate students safely in case of an emergency, which may involve lifting, carrying, or guiding students out of the bus.


Terms of Employment:


180 Days; Salary based on district S alary Scale for Bus Driver

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
