Job summary

Boston Public Schools is seeking a Bus Attendant to monitor and assist students during transportation. You report to the Head of School and work to ensure safe, orderly transit to and from school.

Responsibilities include supervising students on the vehicle, assisting with boarding and deboarding, and enforcing safety rules. Prioritizes safety and proper conduct on all routes.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to enter/exit bus via steps repeatedly.
  • Must live in the City of Boston or be willing to move to the City of Boston if hired.
  • Ability to lift 25-49 lbs.
  • Proficiency in English.

Responsibilities

  • Attend to the general supervision of all students on the vehicle.
  • Board the vehicle before or at the first stop and remain on the vehicle until all students reach their stops.
  • Ride with students in the back of the vehicle; avoid front seat if others are available.
  • Assist students in and out of the vehicle as needed.
  • Check the vehicle to ensure all students have exited at their stops.
  • Model appropriate behavior and avoid horseplay or arguments with students.
  • Ensure students wear seat belts where required.
  • Ensure students do not leave the vehicle at non-assigned stops; direct driver to contact the dispatcher if needed.
  • Enforce rules: no food/beverages, no smoking, no radios.
  • Notify school at least 30 minutes prior to morning shift or two hours prior to afternoon shift in case of absence.
  • Perform other related duties as directed by supervisors.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Job Description

Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) are responsible for monitoring and assisting students while they are being transported to and from school. They report to the Principal/Headmaster of the assigned school.

Reports to: Head of School

Job Overview: SPED Cab Monitors are assigned to monitor and assist students with special needs while they are being transported to and from school.

Responsibilities
  1. The primary responsibility of a Transportation Attendant (Bus Monitor) is to attend to the general supervision of all students on the vehicle.
  2. To cover a monitor-required route, Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) must board the vehicle before or at the first stop on the route and remain on the vehicle at all times until every student has reached his or her stop.
  3. Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) should ride with the students in the back of the vehicle and not in the front seat unless only the front seat is available.
  4. Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) are required to assist students in and out of the vehicle if necessary.
  5. Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) are required to check the vehicle to insure that all students have exited at the appropriate stops.
  6. Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) must exhibit proper behavior at all times. They are role models and should not engage in horseplay or arguments with students.
  7. Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) must ensure that all students wear seat belts where necessary.
  8. Students should not be allowed to leave the vehicle anywhere other than their assigned stops. If a student leaves the vehicle without authorization, Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) direct the driver to contact the dispatcher immediately.
  9. Students must be prohibited from consuming food or beverages, smoking, or bringing radios on the vehicle. Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) must also abide by these rules.
  10. In the event of an absence, Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) must notify the school to which you are assigned at least one-half hour prior to your scheduled reporting time for the morning and/or at least two hours prior to your scheduled reporting time for the afternoon.
  11. Transportation Attendants (Bus Monitors) are also responsible for performing other related duties as directed by their supervisors.
  12. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of school bus safety.
Ability To
  • Operate a wide variety of safety equipment and adaptive equipment on buses, including wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts, Child Safety Restraint Systems, and other safety equipment, in a safe and effective manner.
  • Move a wheelchair on and off the bus as needed.
Qualifications - Required
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to enter/exit bus via steps repeatedly.

  • Ability to lift 25-49 lbs.
  • Proficiency in English.
Qualifications - Preferred
  • Previous experience working in a school setting and/or with school aged children.
  • CPR/First Aid Certified.
