Responsibilities

  • Assist loading/unloading students and help them cross safely.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs and move upto 50 feet using proper technique.
  • Operate wheelchair lifts, restraints and safety seats.
  • Monitor student behavior and address health needs on the bus.
  • Prepare referrals or behavior reports for appropriate personnel.
  • Collaborate with staff and families regarding discipline.
  • Ensure students remain seated throughout the route.
  • Assist in emergencies and evacuations as needed.
  • Communicate route changes to teachers and families.
  • Follow safety procedures per state/local rules.
  • Maintain Ohio Educational Aide Permit and show consistent attendance.

Who We Are:

The Springfield City School District, home to The John Legend Theatre, is seekinga Bus Aide for the 2026-2027 school year. We are a nationally ranked Division I District serving approximately 7,500 Pre‑K through grade 12 students, in a vibrant learning community of 17 state of the art buildings in west-central Ohio. As a Bus Aide you are required to:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate ability to operate vehicle restraints, lifts, and safety equipment.
  • Obtain a State of Ohio Educational Aide's Certificate (acquired after employment).
As a Bus Aide you will:
  • This school route may include wheelchairs, car seats, safety vest, ISS and work study, gifted and talented or other programs
  • Assists bus driver with the loading and unloading of students during the daily bus routes; assists students when necessary to cross to and from the curb.
  • Lifts students up to fifty (50) lbs and move up to fifty (50) feet in a safe manner using proper techniques.
  • Operates wheelchair lifts, wheelchair anchoring mechanism, restraints, safety seats, safety belts, etc.
  • Pushes or pulls student with a wheelchair on or off lifts and/or ramps and transports as required.
  • Monitors and assists the driver with behavior of students while on vehicle (e.g., handles discipline, behavior, and health problems, attends to special needs of students, recognizes emergency situations, etc.).
  • Prepares written referral or behavior reports and delivers to the appropriate person (e.g., administrator, parent, etc.).
  • Works and cooperates with school personnel and/or parents regarding discipline problems.
  • Checks and ensures each student is appropriately seated before bus movement and maintains that seating throughout the route.
  • Assists driver in emergencies; helps evacuate bus through emergency doors, windows and hatches as required; obtains emergency assistance as necessary.
  • Assists bus driver and substitute drivers in traveling correct route
  • Assists driver in communicating with teachers, families, administrators, care givers, etc. (e.g., schedule changes, route changes, breakdowns, etc.).
  • Checks each seat for remaining students and/or belongings after each route.
  • Follows safety procedures for students transportation in accordance with State and Local Boards of Education rules and regulations.
  • Maintains State of Ohio Educational AidePermit.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance and work ethics.
What We Offer:

As a contracted employee, this position works4 hours per day (minimum).

Starting salary is $19.79 per hour.

Salary and other details available online in the Springfield Education United Support Staff agreement (SEUSS)

Per our negotiated agreement: Article -Lines 18 & 19 - "The district reserves the right to adjust individual routes throughout the year according to the needs of the district". Changes to routes will be made to fill the needs of the schools and the school district.
