Position Summary

Under the supervision of school administration, the Building Substitute Teacher supports the daily academic operations of the middle/high school by providing consistent classroom coverage in the absence of regular teachers. The Building Substitute Teacher reports to the assigned school on a regular schedule and may provide coverage across various subjects, grade levels, and school settings throughout the school year.

This role supports continuity of instruction and contributes to maintaining a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment. Assignments may vary based on the daily needs of the school.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Report to the assigned school on each regularly scheduled workday, prepared to accept and fulfill assignments as directed by school administration.
  • Follow lesson plans provided by classroom teachers or collaborate with staff to deliver appropriate instructional content.
  • Provide classroom coverage across various subjects and grade levels as assigned.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, study halls, and other school settings to maintain order and ensure student safety.
  • Manage classroom behavior in accordance with school policies and procedures.
  • Take attendance and maintain accurate records during assigned coverage.
  • Provide appropriate instructional assistance and support to students.
  • Provide feedback to the absent teacher or school administration as requested.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include study hall supervision, in-school suspension coverage, lunchroom duties, arrival or dismissal supervision, or support for special events.
  • Support school-wide initiatives and contribute to a positive school climate.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
  • Follow all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, school procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Superintendent's designee.
Work Schedule

This is a school-year position with a regularly scheduled assignment aligned with the district-approved school calendar. The position is scheduled for a 6.5-hour workday. The specific work schedule and assignment will be established by the District based on operational and student needs.

The Building Substitute Teacher is expected to report to the assigned school building on each regularly scheduled workday and remain available for assignment throughout the scheduled workday.

The position may be assigned on a full-time or part-time basis, as determined by the District. The specific FTE status, work schedule, compensation, and benefit eligibility shall be established in the employee's individual employment agreement or other applicable employment documentation.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Valid Connecticut substitute teaching authorization, teaching certification, or other appropriate authorization as required by the State of Connecticut or District.
  • Prior experience working with middle and/or high school students preferred.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.
  • Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to work collaboratively with school staff.
  • Ability to adapt to different classroom environments, subject areas, grade levels, and student needs.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and exercise sound judgment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.
Equipment

Uses standard classroom and office equipment, including personal computers, interactive displays, telephones, printers, copiers, and other district-approved technology.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods during the school day.
  • Ability to move throughout classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and other school environments.
  • Ability to supervise students and respond promptly to student needs or safety concerns.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Ability to assist with or respond to routine student needs as appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and through other appropriate communication methods.
  • Ability to perform duties in a school environment that may include prolonged periods of standing, walking, and interaction with students.
