Michigan State University in East Lansing is seeking a Building Service Worker to maintain cleanliness across dining rooms, halls, offices, classrooms, and other facilities. You will clean restrooms, floors, and spaces, and set up rooms for conferences and classes.

The role requires physical stamina and the ability to relate well with students and staff. Work hours are Sunday-Thursday 6:30am-3pm at E Wilson Hall on MSU campus.

Qualifications

  • One year of satisfactory work experience as a Building Service Worker or equivalent.
  • Lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.
  • Ability to relate to, and work with college students and college personnel.
  • Good physical condition.

Responsibilities

  • Sweep, mop, and clean dining rooms, halls, offices, classrooms and other spaces.
  • Clean restrooms, showers, and related facilities and fixtures.
  • Re-supply toilet tissue, towels, soap, and similar items in restrooms and locker rooms.
  • Operate floor machines, vacuums, carpet cleaners, and window/wall washing equipment.
  • Move furniture and equipment, set up spaces for conferences, banquets, classes, meetings and workshops.
  • Remove trash and maintain cleanliness of building entrances and common areas.
  • Assist with minor repairs and painting and lock/unlock exterior doors.

Position Summary
Characteristic Duties – Responsibilities
  • Sweeps, polishes, and wet mops dining rooms, halls, offices, apartments, lobbies, study lounges, classrooms, auditoriums, pressing rooms, treatment rooms, laundry rooms, shower rooms, locker rooms, stairways, outside entrances, and all such areas.
  • Cleans restrooms and shower room toilets, lavatories, urinals, shower stalls, floors, towel dispensers, all chrome, walls, ceiling, partitions, mirrors, and all other areas in room.
  • Re-supplies toilet tissue, towels, soap and similar items in shower rooms, locker rooms, restrooms and bathrooms.
  • Periodically scrubs and refinishes floors with sealers and finishers.
  • Uses electronic floor machines, battery or electric automatic scrubbers, vacuums, carpet cleaning machines, and window and wall washing machines.
  • Washes walls, ceilings, windows, furniture, doors, and other related surfaces.
  • Moves furniture and equipment, cleans, dusts and polishes furniture and equipment.
  • Sets up and removes chairs, tables, easels and P.A. equipment for conferences, banquets, classes, meetings and workshops.
  • Replaces light bulbs and reports any observed electric, plumbing or mechanical failures.
  • Removes, cleans and replaces soiled drapes and shower curtains.
  • Cleans drinking fountains; cleans aluminum, brass, chrome or enamel; cleans surfaces on doors, trim, stair railing, etc.
  • Cleans and clears trash from building entrances, sweeps or shovels snow from building entrances, and empties ash urns at building entrances.
  • Turns in lost and found articles to supervisor.
  • Requests supplies necessary to perform job.
Perform related duties as assigned including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:
  • May collect, sort and transport soiled and clean linen.
  • May orient new Building Sanitation Workers and student employees to the assigned facilities.
  • Properly cleans and stores above equipment and other general maintenance equipment after use.
  • Keeps workers' storage and work areas clean at all times.
  • Locks and unlocks outside doors of buildings.
  • Assists students with minor building-related and maintenance problems.
  • May make minor repairs and do incidental painting.

All positions in RHS are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.

Minimum Requirements
  • One year of satisfactory work experience as a Building Service Worker or an equivalent combination of training and experience is necessary.
  • Lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds is necessary.
  • Ability to relate to, and work with college students and college personnel.
  • Good physical condition.
