The City of Plainfield is seeking a qualified Building Inspector to inspect new and existing buildings, review construction plans, conduct field inspections, and clearly communicate code requirements to contractors, architects, and property owners. The Inspector enforces the State Uniform Construction Code to protect public safety, health, and welfare.

Candidates must possess a valid Building Inspector's License (RCS, ICS, and/or HHS) issued by NJ DCA, thorough knowledge of the State UCC, and

  • Possession of a valid Building Inspector's License (RCS, ICS, and/or HHS) issued by NJ DCA.
  • Thorough knowledge of the State Uniform Construction Code and related subcodes.
  • Ability to review building plans and evaluate for code compliance.
  • Experience testifying in court to prosecute violations.
  • Valid New Jersey driver's license and residence within commuting distance preferred.

The Queen City is a special charter form of government comprised of 6.034 square miles and a population of 57,141 (2025 U.S. Census Bureau estimate), with a 2026 municipal budget of $119 million. The position of Building Inspector is available immediately. The City is seeking a qualified, experienced professional with strong analytical, communication, and enforcement skills. The ideal applicant will be a detail-oriented team member who can review construction plans, conduct field inspections, and clearly communicate code requirements to contractors, architects, and property owners. The Building Inspector is responsible for inspecting new and existing buildings and structures to ensure compliance with the State Uniform Construction Code and for enforcing the Code to protect public safety, health, and welfare. The candidate must be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of building subcodes, structural design and analysis, basic material and fire protection standards, and applicable inspection tools and test methods. In addition, the ideal candidate shall be able to prepare clear, accurate inspection reports, maintain essential records, and testify in court when necessary to prosecute code violations.

  • Possession of a valid Building Inspector's License of the appropriate class (RCS, ICS, and/or HHS) issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
  • Thorough knowledge of the State Uniform Construction Code, including structural design and analysis of wood framing, light steel, and wall-bearing systems, as well as applicable material, fire protection, and inspection standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret provisions of the State Uniform Construction Code and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to residential, small commercial, industrial, and/or high-rise structures, consistent with license classification.
  • Ability to review building construction plans and specifications for accuracy and code compliance, and to evaluate plans prepared by others.
  • Proven ability to work harmoniously with municipal unit heads, private contractors, and architects, and to prepare clear, sound, and informative inspection reports.
  • Ability to prosecute violations of the building code by appearing in court as required.
  • Possession of a valid New Jersey driver's license, if operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Residence within a reasonable commuting distance of Plainfield is preferred.
