Job summary

  • High school diploma and 2 years’ experience as a general building construction supervisor or 1 year as an inspector.
  • Building Inspection Technology certificate can substitute for 1 year of inspector experience.
  • Valid California driver’s license (C license) is required.
  • ICC certification as inspector within 2 years of employment.
  • Knowledge of building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and zoning codes.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects buildings and similar structures for code compliance.
  • Ensures work is performed safely per approved plans and specifications.
  • Evaluates materials and methods for footings, foundations, framing, and other phases.
  • Provides information to builders, architects, and the public on code requirements.
  • Checks plans for regulatory compliance and maintains inspection records.
  • May work shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Job description

The City of Manhattan Beach - Community Development Department is actively seeking a knowledgeable Building Inspector as a collaborative team member, with experience in field inspections for both residential and commercial construction, and a predisposition to customer service. Under direction from higher-level building inspectors, the Building Inspector inspects buildings and structures to see that construction or alteration work is being done according to approved plans and in accordance with the provisions of building codes; and does related work as required.

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.

  • Inspects buildings and similar structures that are being constructed, altered, moved, or demolished to see that work being done complies with provisions of the building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and related codes and ordinances.
  • Determines that buildings and structures are being constructed in a safe manner in accordance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Inspects the quality of materials and methods for construction for footings, foundations, excavations, concrete work, framing, lathing, plastering, masonry, and other construction phases.
  • Provides information to builders, architects, and the general public regarding requirements of building codes and ordinances.
  • Checks plans to assure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • keeps records of inspections made and actions taken.
  • May be required to work shifts, weekends, and/or holidays.
Education/Training/Experience:
  • Graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience as a general building construction supervisor OR one (1) year as an inspector in building work.
  • Possession of a Building Inspection Technology certificate from an accredited institution, college or university can be substituted for the one (1) year of building inspector experience.
Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements:
  • Must have a valid California “C” driver’s license.
  • Certification as an inspector by the International Code Council is required within the first two (2) years of employment.
Knowledge of:

Pertinent building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and zoning codes and ordinances; proper construction methods in building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work; and general Safety Orders.

Ability to:

Understand and interpret technical codes and ordinances; read and interpret building construction plans and specifications; maintain records and prepare progress reports; and work tactfully and effectively with other City personnel, building contractors, workers and the public.
