Job summary

City of Florence is seeking a Building Inspector to enforce local building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards through regular site inspections and plan reviews. You will work with contractors and property owners to ensure code compliance during construction and occupancy, reporting to the Building Official.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED (associate or bachelor’s degree preferred in construction-related fields); ICC Building Inspector certification preferred;

Responsibilities

• Inspect construction projects and existing structures for code compliance.
• Review plans and permits; coordinate with contractors and property owners to ensure code compliance.
• Report findings to Building Official and maintain accurate documentation.

Skills

Experience in construction/engineering

Valid SC driver’s license

Education

High school diploma or GED

Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or related field (preferred)

ICC Building Inspector certification (preferred)

Certifications plan to obtain within 1 year (4 certs)

Job description

Building Inspector
$24.20/hour; 37.5 hours/week

• High school diploma or GED required, associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field preferred
• Experience in construction, engineering, or code enforcement is highly desirable
• Certification as a Building Inspector (e.g., ICC Residential or Commercial Building Inspector) issued by South Carolina Labor License and Regulations is preferred
• Must obtain the first required certification within one year of the hire date. Each subsequent certification must be obtained within one (1) year of passing the previous one, until all four (4) certifications are completed to meet the requirements of the South Carolina Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR) and the City of Florence for Building Inspector certification
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license

The Building Inspector is responsible for ensuring that construction projects and existing structures comply with applicable building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards. This role involves regular site inspections, reviewing plans and permits, and working with contractors and property owners to ensure code compliance throughout construction and occupancy phases. The Building Inspector reports directly to the Building Official.
