Job summary

UES is seeking a Building Envelope Inspector to conduct field inspections on roofing, waterproofing, air/vapor barriers, cladding, fenestrations, and insulation. You will ensure installations meet design specs, manufacturer guidance, and codes across new construction, renovation, and restoration projects, with emphasis on durability, energy efficiency, and weather resistance.

The role requires 3–5 years in envelope inspections, knowledge of roofing and related systems, and ability to read

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree preferred in construction tech, architecture, or engineering.
• 3–5 years of experience in building envelope inspections, QA/QC, or materials testing.
• Knowledge of roofing, waterproofing, curtain wall systems, insulation, and air/vapor barriers.
• Familiarity with codes/standards (ASTM, IBC, ABAA, NRCA, RCI).
• ABAA Certified Inspector, RRO, or IIBEC credentials preferred or willing to obtain.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, product specs, and manuals.
• Excellent observational, documentation, and communication skills.
• Proficiency with field reporting software, tablets, or inspection apps.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to job sites.

Responsibilities

• Inspect the installation of building envelope systems during construction phases.
• Verify compliance with drawings, specifications, codes, and manufacturer standards.
• Identify workmanship issues and communicate corrective actions to teams.
• Perform field testing such as adhesion or infrared thermography (if qualified).
• Maintain field notes, photos, and inspection reports for each visit.
• Coordinate with PMs, contractors, and design professionals to resolve non-conformances.
• Review submittals, shop drawings, and product data for envelope systems.
• Participate in pre-installation meetings and punch list walkthroughs.
• Stay up to date with envelope tech, materials, and testing protocols.
• Promote job site safety and PPE usage.

The Building Envelope Inspector is responsible for conducting field inspections and assessments of building envelope systems including roofing, waterproofing, air/vapor barriers, cladding, fenestrations, and insulation to ensure they are installed according to design specifications, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable building codes. This role supports new construction, renovation, and restoration projects with a focus on durability, energy efficiency, and weather resistance

Responsibilities

• Inspect the installation of building envelope systems during various phases of construction, including waterproofing, air barrier systems, roofing assemblies, curtain walls, and fenestrations
• Verify compliance with project drawings, specifications, applicable codes (IBC, ASTM, ABAA, etc.), and manufacturer installation standards
• Identify workmanship issues, material inconsistencies, or construction defects and communicate corrective actions to project teams
• Perform field testing such as adhesion testing, water infiltration testing, or infrared thermography (if qualified)
• Maintain thorough field notes, photographic documentation, and inspection reports for each visit
• Coordinate with project managers, contractors, and design professionals to resolve non-conformance issues
• Review submittals, shop drawings, and product data related to envelope systems for quality assurance
• Participate in pre-installation meetings and punch list walkthroughs to support envelope integrity throughout project life cycle
• Stay up to date with current envelope technologies, materials, and testing protocols
• Promote and enforce job site safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or coursework in construction technology, architecture, or engineering preferred
• 3–5 years of experience in building envelope inspections, building construction, QA/QC, or materials testing
• Knowledge of roofing, waterproofing, curtain wall systems, insulation, and air/vapor barriers
• Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASTM, IBC, AAMA, ABAA, NRCA, RCI)
• Certifications such as ABAA Certified Inspector, RRO (Registered Roof Observer), or IIBEC credentials preferred or willingness to obtain
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, product specifications, and technical manuals
• Excellent observational, documentation, and communication skills.
• Proficiency with field reporting software, tablets, or inspection apps
• Ability to work outdoors in variable weather and access active construction sites (including ladders, scaffolds, or lifts)
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to job sites

Travel Requirements

• This position requires moderate travel, approximately up to 40% of the time, in support of business objectives and client engagements. Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may be conducted in outdoor or operational environments. Adherence to all company safety protocols and use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position primarily works in an outdoor work environment, regularly exposed to varying field conditions, including:

• Sites that may not be accessible by vehicle, requiring travel on foot through wetlands, swamps, grasslands, fields, and other uneven or rugged terrain with natural and man-made obstacles such as sand, brush, and debris.
• Moderate to loud noise levels, common in active construction and industrial environments.
• Exposure to environmental elements including dirt, dust, sun, heat, humidity, and adverse weather conditions.

The physical requirements for this position may include and are not limited to:

• Ability to lift and/or carry 35 to 75 lbs. up to 75 feet, involving regular repetitive motion.
• Ability to stand, walk, drive, and operate equipment for extended periods.
• Frequent use of hands and arms for typing, handling tools, and operating equipment.
• Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, pull, kneel, climb, balance, lift, carry, and push as required for fieldwork and inspections.
• Ability to speak and hear effectively to communicate in noisy environments and with project teams.
• Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant, and peripheral vison, depth vision, and ability to focus) smell, hear, touch (use hands to reach climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit).
