Job summary

JLL is seeking a Data Center Operating Engineer for a 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM night shift rotation at our Charlotte facility. You will operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair critical data center systems to ensure 100% uptime, including fire/life safety, HVAC, electrical, and mechanical subsystems.

The role requires 4+ years of related experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to work various schedules and holidays. Familiarity with CMMS, BMS, and vendor coordination is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • 4+ years of related work experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, HVAC, piping/plumbing, and central utility plant operations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to work with tenants and contractors and handle shift work including holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, monitor, and perform preventive maintenance of data center systems to ensure 100% uptime.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and repair electrical, mechanical, and plumbing equipment.
  • Record readings and adjust operations to ensure proper equipment function.
  • Monitor building management systems and respond to alarms and alerts.
  • Analyze system operation to identify causes of problems and take corrective action.
  • Follow safety policies for hazardous materials and keep workplace clean and safe.
  • Learn the data center site to manage incidents and events affecting critical systems.
  • Manage work orders, CMMS, vendor management, and customer-facing tickets.
  • Follow emergency escalation procedures and perform other duties as required.

Data Center Operating Engineer

Shift: 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM (12-hour night shift rotation)

Training Period: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM for first 2 months, then transition to permanent night shift

What This Job Involves –

The Operating Engineer, Critical Environments, will have a strong focus on operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing facility equipment on all systems. Individuals are expected to demonstrate technical expertise in one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations) and be multi-skilled in others in order to successfully complete daily/weekly work assignments.

What is your day to day?
  • Responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and performing preventive maintenance and continuous operation of all data center systems to maintain 100% Up-time including: fire/life safety, mechanical systems such as (HVAC, chillers, crac, crah, plumbing, controls), electrical including emergency backup systems such as (lighting, UPS, ATS, STS, PDU, generators, primary switchgear, power distribution, transformers), and hot water systems.
  • Monitors operation, adjusts, and maintains refrigeration, chilled water, and air conditioning equipment; boilers, and ventilating and water heaters; pumps, valves, piping, and filters; other mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Must record readings and make and adjust where necessary to ensure proper operation of equipment.
  • Monitor building management systems and respond to alarms and alerts promptly.
  • Requires the ability to analyze the operation of various systems, determine the cause of any problems/malfunctions and take corrective action as required
  • Comply with departmental policy for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Maintains a clean and safe workplace.
  • Learn and understand the data center site in-order to manage incidents and events that put the critical systems at risk.
  • Work order management, including CMMS, Vendor Management, and Customer Facing Tickets.
  • Understanding and complying with emergency escalation procedures.
  • Perform additional job duties as required.
Desired experience and technical skills
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • 4+ years related work experience.
  • Systems, emergency generators, and switchgears.
  • Demonstrated verbal/written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, or governmental regulations and codes.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before small groups of tenants or fellow employees.
  • Working knowledge or the capability of developing proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Microsoft Access and any other software packages.
  • Must be able to professionally interact with tenants and contractors.
  • Must be able to work different schedules.
  • Must be able to work Holidays.
  • Must be able to respond to site emergencies.

  • Hands-on experience working in a data center/critical facility, including UPS.
Physical Requirements
  • Walking large, campus-like settings.
  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and working/extending overhead.
  • Lifting a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Climbing stairs and navigating rooftops to access equipment.
  • Using ladders up to 30 ft and working from heights & ability to climb a ladder with a 300-lb weight limit.
