Job summary

Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. (SSR) seeks a Building Enclosure Intern to support enclosure consulting, design review, and field investigations. This internship offers exposure to exterior systems, bridging architecture, structural engineering, and materials science.

You’ll participate in site visits, review drawings, assist in testing procedures, and help prepare technical reports under supervision. Ideal students are pursuing Architecture, Civil Engineering, or Building Science and are ready for

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Building Science, or related field.
  • Completion of sophomore year or higher by the start of the internship.
  • Strong attention to detail and interest in building systems, materials, and performance.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to perform field work in various environmental conditions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or Bluebeam is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in evaluating building envelope systems for new construction and existing buildings.
  • Conduct site visits to observe construction progress, inspect details, and document field conditions.
  • Help review architectural drawings and specifications for compliance with best practices and performance criteria.
  • Participate in enclosure testing procedures, including water infiltration testing, infrared thermography, and air barrier evaluations.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, inspection checklists, and field documentation.
  • Collaborate with architects, contractors, and SSR design teams to resolve enclosure challenges.
  • Apply industry standards and SSR policies under the guidance of project leads; document work with accuracy and completeness.
  • Attend team meetings; capture notes, actions, and due dates; follow up to keep tasks moving.
  • Seek opportunities to expand knowledge and skills; share recent developments or coursework insights with the team.
  • Participate in internal/external trainings, lunch‑and‑learns, and site walks to build practical experience.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and peers; ask questions proactively and elevate blockers early.

What You’ll Do

SSR is seeking a motivated Building Enclosure Intern to join our team and support enclosure consulting, design review, and field investigation efforts. Our Building Enclosure team specializes in the performance, durability, and integrity of exterior building systems including roofs, walls, windows, and waterproofing. This internship offers exposure to a growing discipline that bridges architecture, structural engineering, and materials science—ideal for students interested in building science and building performance.

Who We’re Looking For
  • Pursuing a degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Building Science, or a related field.

  • Judgment and decision‑making, with attention to detail and follow‑through.
  • Positive interpersonal collaboration and professionalism in team settings.
