Building Enclosure Consultant 2 – RDH Building Science

Overview

The Consultant role requires knowledge in building science, enclosure design, and building enclosure construction principles. The position blends site field review and office work related to building documentation and can lead to Professional Engineering licensure and a Project Manager position as experience grows.

Key Responsibilities

• Participate from concept design to implementation on new construction and existing building projects.
• Write reports; prepare and deliver presentations to internal and external teams.
• Assist in delivering services that meet RDH quality standards, following internal processes and technical checklists.
• Help develop and deliver in‑house and client education and training programs.

Building Enclosure Consulting (New Construction or Existing Building Rehabilitation)

• Participate in design meetings with owners, developers, architects, and consultants; provide design recommendations and review enclosure assemblies and details.
• Perform site visits to review construction progress against contract documents.
• Prepare site visit reports documenting observations, field‑testing results, and recommendations for deficiencies.
• Attend regular site meetings with owners, architects, contractors, developers, product manufacturers, and other relevant parties.
• Review mock‑ups of details and assemblies; use independent judgement to recommend design modifications.
• Review contractor shop drawings for conformance with project intent, building‑science principles, and scheduling.
• Review or create site instructions and proposed change orders for items not in the original contract.
• Research building materials for alternative or non‑typical conditions; provide recommendations to senior staff.
• Assist senior staff in developing recommendations to clients for new construction and existing building projects; work independently and in groups.
• Act as a liaison with clients to foster strong relationships.

Existing Building Enclosure Investigation

• Review architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings to determine original detailing and identify risks for water penetration, air leakage, or condensation.
• Examine maintenance records, repair documents, and previous consultant reports.
• Coordinate and conduct on‑site investigations of existing problems, including visual reviews of exterior and interior components.
• Provide order‑of‑magnitude budget estimates, including quantity take‑offs and unit rates.
• Prepare written reports documenting conditions, future risks, and recommendations for renewal, rehabilitation, or maintenance.
• Assist in preparing construction document packages for various projects.
• Coordinate building and development permit applications.
• Coordinate and undertake field review and contract administration activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Engineering or Applied Science (required).
• Experience in building‑science consulting; co‑op positions with consulting or construction firms are an asset.
• Field experience addressing site conditions and working with construction processes (asset).
• Eligibility to enroll in an EIT program (preferred but not required).

Benefits and Perks

The base salary range is $62,000 – $81,000 annualized for a full‑time role, dependent on qualifications, skills, experience, and location. Additional compensation may include discretionary incentives and share ownership.
