Job summary

The City of Hopewell is seeking a Building Inspector to enforce the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code for new construction and existing buildings in Hopewell. The role includes conducting inspections, evaluating work for code violations, and issuing detailed reports referencing specific code sections.

You will collaborate with contractors, owners, and professionals in construction to ensure safe and habitable structures and support rental housing oversight under city ordinances.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and at least 3 years experience in construction work, property maintenance, building inspection, plan review environment or similar professional experience.
• Virginia DHCD certification in one approved category is required within 18 months of hire.
• Virginia DHCH certification in Property Maintenance is required within 18 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Enforces the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC) for new buildings through inspections at key construction milestones.
• Inspects and evaluates construction work to identify code violations.
• Issues clear, written inspection reports that reference code sections.
• Meets with contractors, architects, engineers, building owners, and project managers to assess code compliance.
• Administers the Rental Inspection Program (Chapter 19, Article VIII) and conducts inspections and communications of compliance.
• Performs residential walkthroughs with owners to assess code violations and required corrections.
• Responds to citizen complaints regarding maintenance, enforcement, and housing ordinances.
• Issues courtesy letters and notices of non-compliance and assists with enforcement actions.
