A local school district in South Carolina is looking for a Maintenance/Custodial/Grounds Worker to manage facilities and ensure a safe environment. SUMMARY

To help maintain the full functioning of the school complex and all building connected to it: operating at a mechanical level of excellence so that all goals of the educational experience are met. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policy (ies) and procedures.
  • Supervises all building and grounds personnel; duties include planning, scheduling, organizing and directing work, training personnel. Assists staff in maintaining school buildings and rounds such as: routine grounds keeping including mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, and landscaping.
  • Evaluated the performance of all custodial/maintenance and grounds staff on a regular basis.
  • Examines school buildings on a regular basis for needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Develops and plans for seasonal work needs.
  • Maintains an inventory and recommends the purchase of suitable supplies, tools and equipment. Responsible for grounds shop supplies, inventory, and upkeep and for repairs of maintenance vehicles, tractors, mowers, and equipment.
  • Initiates purchase orders for material, as needed.
  • Develop a system for dealing with emergency repair problem.
  • Maintain HVAC systems and plumbing. Performs basic repairs on heating and refrigeration equipment and other appliances.
  • Maintains records of jobs performed and hours worked by employees.
  • Operates and maintains electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Works constantly to promote the safety, health and comfort of the students and employees and is also responsible for the District Hazard Communication Book (MSDS sheets).
  • Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
  • Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  • Ability to perform manual labor.
  • Get certified in applies of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers in compliance with all regulations.
  • Get certified in Athletic Fields Maintenance and be able to schedules irrigation zones and repair broken systems and maintain the fields.
  • Takes a lead role in work orders, projects, and preventive maintenance.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle, tools, and equipment in good operating condition.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and training to exchange information.
  • Responds to emergency situations during and after hours to resolve critical issues.
  • Teach and enforces safety regulations.
  • Inspects contract services for pest control, trash removal, sprinkler system, backflows and others contract services as assign by the supervisor.
  • To be able to work a flexible work schedule.
  • Unlick doors and turns on light and prepares building for start of day and/or lock doors and turn off light and secures building. Performs general maintenance or other duties as assigned by the director of maintenance.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate Degree with a minimum of three years’ experience in planning, operating, and maintaining facilities; minimum of five years’ experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of all regulations regarding maintenance required. Mus possess a South Carolina driver’s license. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); grounds experience and supervisory experience preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram forms and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

HVAC certified; pesticide license or ability to obtain license.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

Need to regularly upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Must have basic computer skills. Must have ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Must be able to work under limited supervision and to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as a toolbox. Occasionally, the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs. such as furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, scaffolds, and cabinets. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.
