Job summary

The Vancouver Police Department in Vancouver, Washington is seeking a qualified Crime Analyst to analyze crime data, identify patterns, and recommend strategies to reduce crime and enhance public safety.

This full-time exempt position requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, computer science, statistics, or related field, plus experience with Excel, Access, and reporting tools. Weekend/evening work may be required.

Qualifications

The City of Vancouver, Washington is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Crime Analyst in the Vancouver Police Department. Crime analysts work in the police precincts and perform a variety of professional and technical level duties involved in the organization, maintenance, and presentation of department statistical data. Work involves gathering, analyzing and interpreting information to accurately anticipate crime patterns and to make recommendations to resolve neighborhood and crime problems.

This position may occasionally be required to work on weekends and evenings.

Crime Analyst is a regular, full-time, exempt position.

Functions

• Plan, oversee and carry out administrative/operational analysis projects working with department personnel, outside agencies and various citizen groups;
• Gather and analyze quantitative and qualitative crime related information from a variety of sources. Help pinpoint where law enforcement resources are most needed and can have the biggest impact;
• Conduct analysis of criminal activity including emerging series, patterns and hot spots and analysis of long term or chronic trends and problems. Prepare summaries, reports and recommendations based on analysis;
• Visualize and analyze geographic crime patterns and recognize new geography of crime associated with education, poverty, housing and the economy;
• Provide knowledge regarding municipal expansion and municipal planning such as: analysis of how municipal expansion may impact crime and public safety. Knowledge about which neighborhoods are most likely to improve, decline or remain unchanged as a result of changes in urban development.
• Provide technical assistance to managers in the design or modification of crime tracking and analysis systems.
• Provide citizens and police staff with general and specific information on criminal and social issues by telephone, written report and public presentation.
• Recommend resources and solutions to neighborhood problems and crime problems, and act as a resource to officers. After implementing particular tactics and strategies, monitor patterns and problems to determine success;
• Work with police department staff to identify goals and objectives for specific crimes analysis;
• Assist with creating strategies for addressing policy issues;
• Perform other duties required to accomplish the objectives of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Education And Experience

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with course work in criminal justice, computer science, statistics, or a related field OR a combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the skills, knowledge and abilities required for the job.
• Education and/or experience should include work with computers, especially spreadsheet and database applications, contemporary analytical techniques, mathematics and statistics.
• Analytical experience involving research and reporting of complex data. Knowledge of the subject matter of crime analysis or experience in law enforcement or emergency services is highly desirable.
• Experience in Microsoft office including Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Word.

Preferred Knowledge

• Thorough knowledge of analysis methods, practices and procedures.
• Basic principles of public relations.
• Knowledge of statistical methods, including trend analysis.
• Knowledge of statistical analysis software, MS programming languages, SQL server and reporting services.

• Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities including establishing and maintaining cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and responding to situations with the public in a fair and tactful manner.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast paced law enforcement environment with rapidly changing work assignments and priorities.
