Job summary

Position Overview and Key Responsibilities

The University of Maryland is seeking a detail-oriented and highly analytical Budget Analyst to support the development, monitoring, analysis, and reporting of institutional budgets and financial activity. This position works collaboratively with academic and administrative units to provide accurate financial information, identify trends, support resource-planning decisions, and ensure compliance with university policies and applicable financial requirements.

The Budget Analyst prepares budget and financial analyses, develops reports and forecasts, evaluates financial performance, and communicates findings and recommendations to university leadership and other stakeholders. This position also contributes to financial reconciliations, fiscal year-end activities, process improvements, and special projects.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong financial expertise, technological proficiency, sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment.

About the University Budget Office at the University of Maryland

The Budget Office coordinates the administration of the university's budget for all university departments, with the primary objective of providing financial stability, ensuring the availability of required services, and maintaining a proper balance between the quality and cost of services.

Physical Demands

Sedentary Work: Primarily desk-based, requiring prolonged periods of sitting while performing tasks such as typing, filing, and using a computer.

Repetitive Motion: Frequency use of a keyboard, mouse, and phone, which may involve repetitive hand and wrist movements.

Occasional Lifting: Ability to lift and carry office materials, files, and supplies up to 20-25 pounds (e.g., boxes, office equipment).

Standing and Walking: Occasional walking to meetings, interacting with staff or faculty, and attending departmental events or presentations.

Visual and Mental Acuity: Requires the ability to focus on financial reports, spreadsheets, and documents for extended periods and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Communication: Frequent verbal communication with staff, faculty, and campus administrators, requiring clear speech and the ability to hear and respond appropriately in meetings and discussions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Five (5) years of professional budget, finance, or accounting experience.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of accounting systems, financial reporting, and budget preparation and analysis.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.
  • Ability to acquire, apply and expand knowledge of the University's policies.
Additional Job Details
Preferences
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, economics, public administration, or a related field.
  • Experience working in higher education, government, or another complex decentralized organization.
  • Experience with Workday and Adaptive systems, data-visualization tools, and reporting applications.
  • Knowledge of fund accounting, position budgeting, sponsored programs, or higher-education financial operations.
  • Experience developing financial dashboards, automated reports, or advanced analytical models.
