Buddhist Spiritual Advisor (Chaplain) at Northeastern University

BUDDHIST SPIRITUAL ADVISOR (“Chaplain”) at NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

NU’s Spiritual Advisors are paid positions covering several classic “chaplaincy” or “campus ministry” functions but with an expanded emphasis on advancing the educational mission of the University and its Center for Spirituality, Dialogue, and Service (www.neu.edu/spirituallife) for more information. A successful candidate will have significant experience as an educator and leader in educational, religious, and/or nonprofit settings; excellent communication, dialogue, organizational, and conflict resolution skills; experience in interfaith work; deep knowledge and experience of one’s own spiritual/religious tradition and respect for others; a passion for working with diverse groups of students; and a commitment to developing student leaders who are interculturally adept, ethically reflective, and spiritually grounded global citizens. Each Spiritual Advisor is supervised by Alexander Levering Kern, the Center’s Executive Director.

The Buddhist Spiritual Advisor will:

  • Work with the Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service (CSDS) to plan and implement programs of spirituality, dialogue, and service, integrating Buddhist teachings and practices into the Center’s interfaith/intercultural mission.
  • Design outreach strategies to engage students, faculty, and staff within the Buddhist tradition.
  • Advise student organizations serving the Buddhist community.
  • Maintain office hours for spiritual advising and guidance.
  • Be available to meet with students of all spiritual backgrounds, including those with no religious affiliation.
  • Meet regularly with the team of Spiritual Advisors for dialogue and planning (once a month, Thursday afternoons, 1-3 pm).
  • Collaborate with the Center's Executive Director to foster communication and cooperation with Buddhist communities locally, nationally, and globally.
  • Represent the Buddhist tradition in university forums, interfaith services, events, conferences, and other programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, and Qualities:

Openness; ability to incorporate students’ interests; dialogue-based teaching approach; experience teaching meditation; extensive knowledge of Buddhist teachings and practices; humility; ability to relate Buddhist teachings to diverse students and contexts; flexibility; international experience with various forms of Buddhism; university experience; meditation and retreat center experience; interfaith dialogue experience; social engagement in Buddhism.

This part-time position may include teaching in Northeastern’s Mindfulness Program and collaborating with other colleges and chaplaincy settings.
