Job summary

Stantec in Chicago, IL, is seeking an experienced Brownfield Project Manager to lead due diligence, assessment and brownfield redevelopment for projects across the Midwest and Great Lakes region. The role emphasizes strong writing, regulatory understanding and senior-level project management.

You will guide Phase I/II ESAs, manage field operations, coordinate with clients and grant-funded initiatives, and ensure safety, quality and on-time delivery within a growing environmental services team.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in environmental due diligence, assessment, remediation, and project management in at least one Great Lakes state.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in geology, environmental science, engineering or related field.
• Experience managing federal or state funded brownfield/redevelopment projects in at least one Great Lakes state and licensure (PG/PE) strongly desired.

Responsibilities

• Manage environmental due diligence, assessment, cleanup, and brownfield redevelopment projects with emphasis on safety, quality, and deadlines.
• Oversee Phase I and Phase II ESAs, asbestos and lead-based paint sampling, with senior review of deliverables.
• Prepare proposals and marketing materials or grant applications for environmental projects.
• Scope and schedule field investigations and manage field operations including health and safety planning.
• Write and review technical work plans, reports, and health and safety plans.
• Coordinate with laboratories and oversight of field contractors.

Your Opportunity

Stantec’s thriving Great Lakes environmental services and brownfield revitalization team is looking for an experienced Brownfield Project Manager to join us. Our team is growing, and we have a need for a project manager with at least 10 years of relevant experience in the environmental field and a strong interest in environmental assessment/cleanup, community revitalization, and brownfield redevelopment. This team member will be primarily focused on due diligence and brownfield revitalization work for communities throughout the Midwest but may explore opportunities within our broader environmental services team including projects in complex assessment and remediation, resiliency, and compliance. Candidates must have a solid understanding of the environmental regulations in at least one State located in the Great Lakes region. Well-qualified candidates will have experience/familiarity with environmental regulations in multiple states and implementing/managing environmental due diligence, assessment, and remediation projects, especially as that relates to State and Federal grant funded projects. Strong writing and communication skills are critical, as is an understanding of effective project management concepts and approaches.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Manage environmental due diligence, assessment, cleanup, and brownfield redevelopment projects with attention to safety, quality, detail, budget, and deadlines.
• Oversee staff completing Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, asbestos and lead-based paint sampling projects providing guidance on scope, schedule, and budget, and providing senior review of deliverables.
• Prepare proposals and other marketing materials.
• Assist with preparing grant applications to fund environmental projects.
• Scope and schedule field investigations.
• Write and review technical work plans, reports, and health and safety plans.
• Plan, schedule, and manage field operations including health and safety planning.
• Prepare and follow written work plans and Health and Safety Plans.
• Conduct environmental sampling including soil, groundwater, soil gas, and indoor air.
• Oversee field contractors (drillers, etc.) and field staff.
• Manage sampling documents and coordinate with laboratories.
• Oversee environmental cleanup activities.

Your Capabilities

• Experience administering and managing State and Federal funded projects.
• Self-starting, team-oriented problem solver.
• Strong research, analysis, and writing skills.
• Majority of time spent in office environment with prolonged sitting and computer work, or combination of office and field.
• Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
• Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.

Education and Experience

• 10+ years of experience in environmental due diligence, assessment, remediation, and project management in at least one Great Lakes (upper Midwest) state.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in geology, environmental science, engineering or related field.
• Experience managing federal or state funded brownfield/redevelopment projects in at least one Great Lakes (upper Midwest) state and professional licensure (i.e. PG and/or PE) strongly desired.

Pay Range

• Locations in MN, OH, VT, & Various CA, ME, NY, VA Areas - $107,100.00 - $160,700.00 Annually
