Job summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation seeks an inspector to assist with visual and tactile inspections of bridges and highway structures, identifying deterioration, damage and defects that could affect safety and service life. You will collect data, prepare reports, support inventory updates, and follow safety rules including MUTCD guidelines while using inspection instruments and CAD/MS Office tools.

Qualifications

Combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field preferred.
Completion of FHWA‑approved safety inspection course is a plus.
Experience in bridge maintenance or structural inspection is desirable.
Proficiency with reports, data entry, and database maintenance.
Ability to read and interpret bridge plans and specifications.
Proficiency in using inspection instruments and tools.

Responsibilities

Operate specialized inspection equipment and vehicles.
Collect structural data and dimensions; prepare inspection reports.
Check information in paper and electronic inspection files and update as needed.
Assist with inventory records and update structure data in the database.
Perform visual and tactile inspections to identify deterioration and defects.
Follow safety rules, use PPE, and apply MUTCD for detours and work zones.
