The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, seeks Bridge Maintainer I–III in Bedford, NH. This is a full-time, permanent position with multiple level progression and competitive hourly pay.

As a bridge maintainer you will perform semi-skilled to skilled construction and maintenance tasks, assist in traffic control and safety procedures, and support permanent bridge operations in a high‑traffic environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent credential.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • MVR must meet minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
  • Must receive a negative result on a pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with CFR and US DOT requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Performs masonry, carpentry, welding, wood and steel fabrication, structural steel placement, and reinforcement of bridge components.
  • Assists in work zone traffic control, environmental controls for wetlands, safety inspections, and installation of temporary bridges such as Bailey Bridges; maintains moveable span bridges.
  • Assists in rigging, scaffolds, and staging for safe lifting of material and equipment; uses PPE and adheres to safety procedures.
  • Operates heavy equipment and works from scaffolds, imposing environments, and high-risk conditions to ensure public safety.
  • Supports Bridge Maintainer I/II and provides supervision when needed; ensures compliance with risk management, safety, and environmental standards.

Salary: Bridge Maintainer I $15.93/hour – $20.80/hour; Bridge Maintainer II $17.81/hour – $23.39/hour; Bridge Maintainer III $19.96/hour – $26.41/hour.

Bridge Maintainer I

Summary: To perform semi-skilled bridge construction work, assisting other bridge maintainers in maintenance, repairs, and construction associated with bridge maintenance activities.

Summary: To perform semi-skilled and skilled bridge construction work, assisting other bridge maintainers in maintenance, repairs, and construction associated with bridge maintenance activities.

  • Valid driver’s license

Bridge Maintainer III

Summary: To perform skilled bridge construction and maintenance duties, assisting and supervising work performed by other bridge maintainers and acting as crew supervisor in the absence of the Bridge Construction Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Equivalent combination of 3 years of education and experience after completion of high school.
  • Education and experience must be in carpentry, concrete construction, structural welding, structural steel erection, structural steel painting, timber construction, or operation of heavy construction equipment, with at least 1 year as a Bridge Maintainer II or equivalent.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL‑A or CDL‑B) with tank and air brake endorsements.
  • Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
  • Must receive a negative result on a pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements.
