The State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Structures is currently recruiting for a Bridge Inspector (Transportation Engineering Technician IV) in Baltimore City. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.

Nature of Work

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist in ensuring compliance with federal requirements that all bridges are inspected on at least a two-year cycle. The Bridge Inspection Team is directly responsible for the inspection of all bridges and structures on the State Highway System, including movable bridges, box culverts, pipes, bulkheads, retaining walls, and other miscellaneous structures. In addition to large bridges measuring over 20 feet, the team is responsible for inspecting small structures ranging from 3 to 20 feet, including pipes and other smaller types of structures.

As the Assistant Team Leader, this position assists the Team Leader in coordinating and overseeing the uniform inspection and reporting of all structures throughout the State Highway network. Responsibilities include helping to ensure that inspections are conducted consistently, accurately, and in accordance with applicable Federal and State requirements, standards, policies, and procedures.

Education

Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience

Five years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Selective Qualification: Two (2) years of the required experience must include bridge inspection.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two-week Federal Certification course for the Condition Inspection of In-service bridges
  • 4-day Federal course for Bridge Inspection refresher course
  • 4-day Federal course for NSTM(FCM) components in Bridge Inspection
  • Non-destructive testing Federal class; SHA Maintenance of Traffic Manager's class (current or expired)
  • Fall protection training
  • Confined space training
  • Operation of bucket training/certification
  • Operation of Snooper truck training/certification
Notes
  • Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
  • Applicants who possess an associates degree in either Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the five-year experience requirement.

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
