Job summary

GFT is seeking a Bridge Engineering Intern in Chicago to support real client projects from mid-May through mid-August. You will work on 3D modeling, design, and drafting for transportation structures under supervision, with mentoring from experienced engineers.

Most interns convert to full-time roles, gaining exposure to multimodal roadway systems. You will bring a passion for bridge design, familiarity with MicroStation and AutoCAD, and strong communication skills, while contributing to cost

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program with a focus on structures.
• Interest in bridge design with basic understanding of bridge principles.
• Familiar with MicroStation and AutoCAD CAD software.
• Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Ability to work both independently and within a design team.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Willingness to learn from experienced engineers.

Responsibilities

• Perform 3D modeling, design, and drafting for transportation structures including bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and sign structures.
• Assist in quantity calculations and contribute to cost estimates.
• Aid in development of construction contract documents and review shop and working drawings.
• Coordinate work activities with other disciplines as directed.
• Assist in reviewing inspection reports and performing bridge load ratings under supervision.
