Employee: Athletic Coach

General Definition and Conditions of Work: To instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for individual and team success, while demonstrating socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, confidence and pride. The coach will continue to grow through clinics, observation, and consultation. The program impacts community image and requires balancing performance with sportsmanship and mental health. The role includes extended hours, injury risk, and due‑process responsibilities. The position is evaluated yearly for renewal.

Reports To: Athletic director, with final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. The head coach advises, coordinates, and supports a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches.

Essential Functions / Typical Tasks
  • Established the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by assistants. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff, encouraging professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance.
  • Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation and at season’s end analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.
  • Maintains discipline, addresses grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the athletic director/principal.
  • Assists the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
  • Prepares scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Safeguards equipment, including storing and reconditioning, and maintains an annual inventory.
  • Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, method or procedural changes.
  • Participates in budgeting with the athletic director, establishing requirements for the next season and recommending equipment guidelines.
  • Is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.
  • Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing who may enter, issue or requisition equipment.
  • Permits athletes to be only in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
  • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking general cleanliness. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment and the facility used.
  • Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instills in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
  • Organizes parents, coaches, players and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promotes the sport within the school via recruiting athletes not in another sports program and promotes the sport outside the school through media, little league or other feasible means.
  • Responsible for the quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintains good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
  • Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments and results.
Student Responsibilities
  • Serves as a mentor to each athlete, promoting the development of character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
  • Gives constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct.
  • Provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant during practices, games, and travel.
  • Provides training rules, schedule, calendar and any other regulations of the sport to each athlete (and their parents) who is a participant.
  • Follows programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies.
  • Directs SPS Trainer to complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to athletic office within 24 hours.
  • Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
  • Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when enforcement is necessary, and contracts parents and the Athletic Director when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport. Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and ongoing study of new theories and procedures. Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.

Education and Experience

Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned / major sport. Demonstrated ability to instruct, motivate, and supervise student‑athletes. Commitment to professional growth through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
