Job summary

Summary

Picks up donations of resalable merchandise and delivers them to specified destinations. Driver is responsible for maintaining schedules, handling merchandise carefully and courteously dealing with the public. Reports to the Trucking Manager.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Picks up donated merchandise at 50 to 300 stops per day in assigned area, which is delivered to an assigned location and properly unloaded.
  • Maintains contact with arc Thrift Stores trucking office:
    • Reports when the route cannot be completed by designated time,
    • Calls in before leaving the work area to receive additional assignments,
    • Follows work instructions and additional stop instructions given by trucking office,
    • Never leaves truck route without authorization from trucking office,
    • Gets authorization from trucking office before leaving the truck route.
  • Ensures that merchandise loaded into the truck is designated for arc Thrift stores.
  • Immediately reports all incidents and accidents:
    • Reports accidents involving property damage, truck damage, or personal injury and other incidents which have potentially harmful consequences for the company,
    • Complies with state and local laws and regulations and arc Thrift Stores policies and procedures.
  • Completes daily paperwork an checks out with the trucking office:
    • If the workday has been less than 8 (eight) hours, he/she may be required to perform additional duties.
  • Removes heavy items from donors’ residences according to prescribed procedures.
  • Ensures that he truck is properly equipped and in good driving condition.
  • Equips the truck with dolly, rope, accident and incident reports, tapping tape, donation bags, tax receipts, trucking instructions, ECT.
  • Uses maintenance checklist to determine the condition of the truck and reports any problems.
  • Adds fuel and oil for proper performance and cleans the truck as required.
  • Loads merchandise to minimize damage.
  • Packs truck using procedures for efficient use of space and safety of merchandise.
  • Secures truck doorways.
  • Maintains accurate records, logs all activity on the route, records each stops and the result of that stop as it is made.
  • Maintains good public relations, politely refuses unsalable merchandise, thanks donors for contributions, and presents a positive image to the public.
  • Cleans and secures the truck at end of each shift.
  • Cleans work area daily.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Trucking Manager.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

  • Knowledge o the city street systems
  • Ability to effectively organize and plan, utilizing available resources to achieve objectives.
  • Ability to accurately map routes.
  • Ability to operate a truck and possess a valid drivers’ license and a good driving record:
    • No more than 2 moving violations or 2 at-fault accidents in the last 3 years
    • No DUIs within the last 5 years.
    • Ability to effectively organize resources to achieve objectives.
    • Ability to interact effectively with employees, external contacts and customers.
    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos.
    • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers and employees of the organization.
    • Ability to add, subtracts, multiply, divide and figure percentages to effectively use operational reports.
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Education And/or Experience Required
  • One year commercial driving experience.
  • City street system knowledge.
  • Experience working with a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to work with individuals possessing developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to use good judgment.
  • Energy to take on fast-paced work.
  • Good listener.
  • Well-organized and self-directed.
Physical Demands
  • 60% of the work is performed outside in all types of weather; 30% is in a truck and 10% is inside in a shop environment. There is some exposure to gasoline.
  • During the work shift, time is spent as follows:
    • 10% standing
    • 50% sitting
    • 40% walking
  • Must travel locally to meet business needs.
  • Close and distant vision is required and ability to focus
    • 70% far vision
    • 30% near vision.
  • Repeated lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds. Equipment is provided for lifting/carrying over 100 pounds.
  • A normal pick up requires stooping and bending; reaching to pick up the bags, boxes, miscellaneous items and furniture into the truck.
  • Required to step up and down 3 feet to get in or out of the truck.
  • Must be able to get in and out of a truck an average of 120 times per day in a six hour time period.
  • Must pass a drug screen and physical to determine ability to perform the above functions.
  • Occasionally work near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, hear, stand and move.
  • Use upper body strength to frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to dust from donations.
