Job summary

Stellantis in Sterling Heights, MI, is seeking a Boiler Operator to safely run and maintain the powerhouse equipment, including steam boilers, hot water generators, and associated systems, ensuring reliable energy supply for the manufacturing facility.

You will monitor process data, keep records in CMMS, perform preventive maintenance, manage water treatment, and support shutdowns and repairs while adhering to safety and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Four years of combined experience and training in central energy plant operations, including at least four years operating centralized steam and compressed air systems.
  • City of Detroit High Pressure Boiler Operator License.
  • City of Detroit 3rd class Refrigeration License.
  • Ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to work any shift and overtime.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and maintain powerhouse utilities production equipment and related systems including steam boilers, hot water generators, compressors, cooling towers, water treatment equipment, and other support systems and ancillary equipment.
  • Operate powerhouse equipment to meet the day-to-day energy demands of the Stellantis facility, including steam and compressed air production as specified.
  • Monitor operating parameters and record data such as production rates, fuel and electrical usage, pressures, temperatures, and alarms.
  • Notify the shift engineer of any unsafe conditions and take corrective action to mitigate hazards.
  • Operate cooling towers and heat exchangers supporting powerhouse operations.
  • Maintain water treatment equipment and monitor water quality; perform routine maintenance such as filter changes and salt for softeners.
  • Perform lock-out/tag-out and other safety procedures for maintenance.
  • Conduct routine maintenance including preventive and minor corrective work.
  • Assist contractors with advanced tasks and calibration of protective devices.
  • Record and document all maintenance using CMMS; ensure spare parts are stocked and area is clean.
  • Troubleshoot and correct problems related to monitoring, control, and operation of equipment.

Job description

Boiler operators will generally be responsible for operating and performing routine maintenance and repair on all equipment within the powerhouse except for new installations, mechanical and electrical. They will operate and maintain steam boilers or hot water generators and associated equipment, including compressors, cooling towers, pumps, and fans.

Responsibilities
  • The safe operation and routine maintenance on all powerhouse utilities production equipment and related systems including steam boilers, hot water generators, compressors, cooling towers, water treatment equipment, and other support systems and ancillary equipment.
  • Operating powerhouse equipment to meet the day‑to‑day energy demands of the Stellantis manufacturing facility, including the production of steam and compressed air at the quantities and specifications required by the manufacturing facility.
  • Monitoring operating parameters and recording operating data, including production rates, fuel usage, electrical usage, pressures, temperatures, vibration indications, alarms, and other pertinent information related to the safe operation of the powerhouse equipment.
  • Promptly notifying the USM or designee (shift engineer) of any unusual, abnormal or potentially unsafe operating conditions and taking action to mitigate any potentially unsafe condition that, if not corrected, could result in out‑of‑specification energy production.
  • Operating all cooling towers and heat exchangers that support the operation of equipment within the powerhouse.
  • Operating and routine maintenance of water treatment equipment for boilers, cooling towers, weld water systems, and hot and cold water closed loops, including routine monitoring of water quality, addition of water treatment chemicals, and routine maintenance such as changing filters and adding salt to softeners.
  • De‑energizing (lock‑out/tag‑out) all equipment within the powerhouse that is required to allow safe performance of maintenance on such equipment.
  • Performing routine maintenance on all powerhouse equipment, including predictive, preventive, and minor corrective maintenance.
  • Assisting contractors with work beyond the capability of the Boiler Operator, including tasks such as protective device calibration.
  • Recording and documenting all maintenance activities performed on powerhouse equipment, utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to electronically document information and historical data.
  • Maintaining an adequate supply of spare parts (belts, hoses, seals, lubricants, sensing devices, gauges, etc.) as related to the trade in a designated storage area within the powerhouse.
  • Troubleshooting and correcting problems related to the proper monitoring, control, and operation of powerhouse equipment.
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly work area, ensuring that the area is left in an unobstructed and safe condition following completion of the job.
  • Performing work and conducting activities directed by the supervisor or designee (shift engineer) within their assigned area that pertains to energy conservation, including repair of leaks, timely turndown of lighting, and other machinery.
Basic Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Four years of combined experience and training in central energy plant operations, including at least four years operating centralized steam and compressed air systems of comparable sizes to those at the plant in question.
  • City of Detroit High Pressure Boiler Operator License.
  • City of Detroit 3rd class Refrigeration License.
  • Ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to work any shift and work some overtime, including daily, weekend, and holidays.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A First‑Class Steam license.
  • A First‑Class Refrigeration license.
