Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biostatistics or related field is required.
  • Minimum 4 years of consulting or healthcare experience.
  • Experience managing large healthcare datasets.
  • Proficiency with SAS or R is essential.
  • Proficiency in logistic regression and time-to-event analyses is expected.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Biostatistics Core at Geisinger collaborates closely with researchers across the health system, providing comprehensive support throughout all stages of the research process—from proposal development to data analysis and interpretation. Core members offer expertise in refining research questions and hypotheses, designing studies and selecting variables, estimating sample size and statistical power, developing analysis plans, designing data collection methods and randomization schemes, and managing data and conducting biostatistical analyses. The Core consists of 10 members with a mix of MS- and PhD‑level positions. Members collaborate with departments across the health system including Community Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, Women’s Health, and support full‑time research faculty on grant‑related efforts.

Position Overview
  • Collaborate on design of clinical research studies, including refining research questions and hypotheses.
  • Write biostatistical analysis plans for research proposals and internal grants.
  • Calculate sample size and study power.
  • Design appropriate study designs, determine analysis types, and design data collection methods.
  • Prepare publication‑quality graphics and assist manuscript preparation.
  • Manage, analyze, and interpret study data and results.
  • Contribute to study publications.
  • Educate residents, staff, and research team on statistical techniques and methods.
  • Provide statistical consultations or collaborations with clinical principal investigators.
  • Participate in research committees.
  • Maintain statistical software packages (SAS or R) and install upgrades.
  • Prioritize concurrent projects and meet deadlines in a multidisciplinary research environment.
Core Competencies & Skills
  • Advanced knowledge of biostatistics, statistical methods in clinical research, and epidemiology.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, able to convey quantitative information to medical personnel and administrative staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a positive team‑oriented attitude.
  • Critical thinking and resourcefulness in providing statistical support.
  • Experienced SAS or R programmer for data manipulation and statistical analysis.
  • Detail‑oriented with strong validation and documentation skills.
  • Effective time‑management and organizational skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Education & Experience
  • Master’s degree in biostatistics or a closely related field (required).
  • Minimum of 4 years of consulting or related work experience in a healthcare environment (required).
  • Experience managing large datasets in a healthcare environment (required).
  • Advanced proficiency with at least one major statistical software package (preferably SAS or R) (required).
  • Proficiency in logistic regression, time‑to‑event (survival) analysis, observational data analysis methods, and fundamental model building.
