Job summary

mPower, Inc. is seeking a Communications Specialist to support external communications for a federal health and biomedical research client.

The role focuses on developing, coordinating, and delivering high-quality content that communicates scientific programs, research initiatives, and opportunities across web, print, and stakeholder channels. You will translate complex biomedical material into clear, engaging content for scientists, stakeholders, and the public, collaborating with researchers

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing communications for external audiences.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific material for diverse audiences.
  • Experience developing content for websites, newsletters, articles, announcements, and digital content.
  • Familiarity with plain-language principles, 508 accessibility, and federal standards.
  • Experience developing or coordinating multimedia communications (graphics, photography, video, social media).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Strong collaboration with scientists, leadership, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to independently manage communications from concept through publication.
  • Experience supporting communications within federal government, biomedical research, healthcare, or academic environments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).

Responsibilities

  • Develop, write, edit, and coordinate external communications for scientific initiatives.
  • Translate complex biomedical information into clear content for diverse audiences.
  • Develop and maintain content for public-facing websites and digital channels.
  • Support communications for research programs, funding opportunities, events, and campaigns.
  • Collaborate with scientists and staff to accurately represent activities.
  • Interview researchers and experts to produce highlights and feature content.
  • Draft and edit communications for researchers, partner organizations, and the public.
  • Support communications plans and content calendars for major initiatives.
  • Coordinate content development and reviews, incorporating stakeholder feedback.
  • Ensure adherence to federal communications, accessibility, branding, and editorial standards.
  • Review materials for grammar, tone, and scientific accuracy.
  • Support development of presentations, graphics, and other visual content.
  • Track activities and report on outreach metrics.
  • Maintain organized repositories of communications assets.
  • Provide communications support for evolving organizational priorities.
