Job summary

Cape Fear Valley Health is seeking a Biomedical Equipment Technician at Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn, NC. You will perform planned maintenance, safety testing, calibration, installation, and routine/emergency service on a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and support medical equipment including anesthesia machines, ventilators, and monitors.

The role requires an Associate degree in Biomedical Electronics or related field, CBET/A+ certification, and 5 years of hands-on maintenance

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Biomedical Electronics or related field is required.
  • CBET or A+ certification required.
  • 5 years’ experience performing maintenance on medical devices or clinical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs PM procedures per manufacturers’ recommendations and industry standards.
  • Maintains and services anesthesia machines, ventilators, patient monitors, imaging devices, and related equipment.
  • Diagnoses problems and documents results using appropriate methods and tools.
  • Coordinates with clinical staff to minimize disruption while completing PM tasks.
  • Has authority to order parts for emergency service or repair as allowed by guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Performs PM procedures using manufacturers' recommendations, standards or code requirements, as well as industry acceptable processes as guidelines.
  • Performs services on specialized equipment in one or more of the following categories: anesthesia machines, ventilators, patient monitoring, first look on diagnostic imaging devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, heart perfusion devices, laser, laboratory analyzers, etc
  • Performs Corrective Maintenance (CM) procedures including diagnosing problems using thermodynamic, electronic/electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and/or other related sciences and documents results of activities performed
  • Interacts with clinical staff to understand and resolve operational problems in scheduling and completing PM procedures while minimizing interference to hospital departments
  • Has authority (based on department guidelines) to order parts and supplies required for emergency service or repair of medical equipment
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education And Formal Training
  • Associate’s degree in Biomedical Electronics, Electronic Technology or related field required
  • CBET or A+ certification required
Work Experience
  • 5 year’s experience performing corrective and planned maintenance on medical devices and/or clinical support equipment required
  • Specialized training by manufacturer or third party equipment repair in such areas as anesthesia machines, ventilators, patient monitoring, first look on diagnostic imaging devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, heart perfusion devices, laser, laboratory analyzers, etc. preferred
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
  • Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
  • Working knowledge and ability to use basic hand tools and test equipment specific to the field
  • Ability to train CTS employees on use and application of select test equipment
  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA, NFPA, The Joint Commission, CMS, EOC, FDA and other specific regulations and standards pertaining to clinical equipment service and repair
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in specialty areas
  • Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity and caring with ability to inspire and motivate others
  • Basic understanding of personal computer operation, applications, networking and ability to input data using keyboard.
  • Ability to operate complex test equipment, analyze and interpret information provided by equipment and clinical staff to determine equipment operational condition
  • Strong customer service and communications skills are required to interact with hospital personnel and vendors to achieve positive outcomes
  • Ability to provide or coordinate in-service training to clinical/professional staff on medical device basic operational and safety functions
Physical Requirements
  • Physically able to balance, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, reach, sit, squat, stand, twist, and walk
  • Ability to mentally concentrate while being subject to stress, interruptions and changing work priorities
  • Ability to work and follow OSHA guidelines while in a hazardous environment(s)
  • Ability to hear speech, distinguish sounds, and speak
  • Near vision, far vision, depth perception, and be able to distinguish colors
  • Sensory ability to distinguish hot, cold, range of temperature, surfaces, fine motor skills, manual dexterity, and detect/distinguish odors
  • Ability to carry or lift up to 50 pounds routinely (50% of the time) and on occasion (5% of the time) up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to push or pull over 100 pounds frequently (20% of the time)
  • Maintains safe working environment for self, other employees, patients, visitors, and medical staff
  • Ability to adapt to frequently changing work priorities
  • Ability to travel to the various CFVHS hospitals, subsidiaries, and/or offsite facilities
