Job summary

The Durham VA Health Care System seeks a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) focused on information systems within the Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) department. You will work on secure, networked medical equipment and critical clinical interfaces to support patient care.

Requirements include US citizenship and 2–3 years of IT/biomed experience with KSAs in HL7, DICOM, cybersecurity, and network configuration. Referrals may apply if qualifications are pending completion.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of HL7 and DICOM standards.
  • Ability to troubleshoot networked medical equipment and interfaces.
  • Experience in maintaining computer/server-based medical equipment and software.
  • Ability to manage projects interfacing with EHR or other systems.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity standards (FDA, FISMA, NIST).
  • Ability to use information security tools (virus protection, patches).
  • Ability to establish medical networks with VLAN/IP addressing.

Job description

Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) specialized in information systems within the Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) Department at the Durham VA Health Care System.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience. One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  • Knowledge of Health Level 7 (HL7) and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standards.
  • Knowledge of advanced testing methods to troubleshoot networked medical equipment and clinical system interfaces.
  • Skill in maintaining computer and server based medical equipment, databases, and software.
  • Skill in managing medical equipment and clinical system projects that interface with an electronic health record or other information systems.
  • Skill in applying cybersecurity standards to medical devices and clinical systems such as Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA), and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidelines.
  • Ability to apply information security tools including virus protection, software updates, and operating system patches.
  • Ability to establish a medical network including VLAN configuration, Internet Protocol addressing, and network security.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
