Job summary

1X Labs seeks a Biomechanics Researcher in San Carlos, CA to advance human-level performance in humanoid robots. You will study biological systems to quantify force, sensing, and stability, and translate findings into hardware and software specifications.

PhD with 5+ years in biomechanics or related fields, plus robotics or control experience, is required. The role covers modeling, experiments, and cross-disciplinary collaboration within a fast-paced research environment.

Qualifications

• PhD in Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field with 5+ years of experience.
• Demonstrated expertise beyond descriptive biomechanics with a focus on modeling, quantitative analysis, or engineering applications.
• Strong secondary background or hands-on experience in robotics, controls, materials, mechanical systems, or related engineering disciplines.
• Proven ability to translate biological insights into actionable engineering specifications or performance targets.
• Strong experimental experience, including test design, instrumentation, data collection, and analysis.

Responsibilities

• Define what human-level performance means in quantitative, engineering-relevant terms and translate those insights into specifications for humanoid robots.
• Study biological systems to understand force generation, energy absorption, sensing, stability, and adaptation; develop performance models and engineering targets.
• Support cross-functional teams by translating biological insights into practical design constraints and opportunities.
• Design and execute experiments to reveal mechanisms of biological performance and adaptation.
