Job summary

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) seeks a fisheries support position to assist hatchery staff in daily fish care and to help with field collections and net-pen monitoring. You will also stock fish for repatriation and contribute to data records for QA/QC.

Duties
  • Assist the hatchery crew in providing daily care to endangered Lost River and Shortnose Sucker in an aquaculture facility.
  • Assist with field work that includes collection of wild larvae and monitoring of fish grow out in lake net-pen operations.
  • Stock fish for repatriation.

Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement - 08/18/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Competitive candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.

For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. Minimum Qualification Requirements
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level

Experience: To qualify, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:

(1) performing work at a fish hatchery checking water quality, feeding fish, cleaning tanks, and treating fish diseases; (2) handling, tagging, and transporting juvenile and adult fish; (3) performing maintenance to equipment, facility infrastructure, and mowing and trimming facility grounds; and (4) entering, organizing, and performing QA/QC on hatchery data. You must include hours per week worked.

Education: Successful completion of at least one full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position (e.g., major study of fish biology, aquaculture or fish culture, limnology, ichthyology, etc.). You must include transcripts.

Combination of education (directly related to the position) and experience as listed above that totals 100% of the requirement. You must include hours per week on your resume and transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level

Experience: To qualify, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:

(1) performing work at a fish hatchery checking water quality, feeding fish, cleaning tanks, and identifying fish pathogens, calculating dosages, and treating fish diseases; (2) leading pond harvest efforts, running fish tagging stations, and independently transporting juvenile and adult fish; (3) leading maintenance efforts to care for hatchery fleet, gear, grounds, and specialized water quality and laboratory equipment, including record keeping and maintaining adequate inventories of needed supplies on hand for staff use; (4) using specialized computer applications to enter, organize, and perform preliminary analysis of data from studies; and (5) assisting biologists and managers draft sections of progress reports, technical reports, briefing papers, and presentations to communicate scientific information. You must include hours per week worked.

Education: Successful completion of at least one full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position (e.g., major study of fish biology, aquaculture or fish culture, limnology, ichthyology, etc.).
