Job summary

Responsibilities

• Prepares detailed specifications and algorithms from which Python and R programs will be written.
• Implements, tests, debugs, and maintains programs and pipelines including large-scale data download, preprocessing, and formatting for downstream analysis and ML/AI modeling.
• Applies third-party tools correctly and explains tool parameters and configurations to the PI; explores deeper into the codebase as needed.
• Advises on hardware and software decisions for efficient application; installs software on the lab compute server as needed.
• Maintains codes and analysis results in lab GitHub.
• Presents codes, pipelines, and infrastructure in weekly PI meetings.
• If AI is used for coding, confirms every line of code is understood by PI.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Summary

Under the PI’s supervision, Bioinformatics Programmer II formulates and implements computational biology and data science projects. This includes developing or modifying complex information systems handling large-scale biological data, maintaining the codes in lab GitHub and the data in lab server, explaining the codes and pipelines to the PI.

Job Duties

• Prepares detailed specifications and algorithms from which Python and R programs will be written. The PI will lead in prioritizing goals and requirements.
• Implements, tests, debugs, and maintains programs and pipelines. This includes coding for large scale (atlas and biobank scale) data download, maintenance, preprocessing, and formatting for downstream analysis and machine learning/AI modeling.
• For third party tools, takes full responsibility to correctly apply the tools and explains the details of the tools’ parameters and configurations to the PI. As needed, goes deeper into the codebase.
• Advises on hardware and software decisions related to efficient application of implemented software. Performs other job related duties as assigned such as installing software in the lab compute server.
• Maintain codes and analysis results in lab GitHub.
• In a weekly meeting with the PI, present the codes, pipelines, and hardware/software infrastructure.
• If AI is used for coding, the PI should be informed and the programmer will confirm that every line of code was properly understood.
• Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Biological Science, or a related field.
• Two years of relevant experience.

• Master’s degree in a related field.
