Job summary

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists is seeking an experienced Biobank Director to lead the biobank operations, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive growth in biobanking services.

The role requires oversight of collection, processing, storage, and shipping, plus staff supervision, program development, and sponsor engagement. A master’s degree is preferred and CAP/FDA/IATA training is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, pathology, cell biology, or a related scientific discipline required; master’s degree preferred.
• At least five years of progressive experience in a biospecimen procurement or biobanking environment.
• Previous supervisory experience with leadership and staff development capabilities.
• Advanced knowledge of specimen collection, processing, storage, annotation, and shipping.
• Experience with specimen inventory-tracking databases and laboratory information management systems.
• IATA training required.
• Working knowledge of CAP, FDA, NYSDOH, GCP, ICH, and other applicable standards.
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Word, and Visio.
• Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the daily operations and strategic growth of the Biobank.
• Establish methods, protocols, and service standards to improve operations.
• Evaluate utilization, productivity, service quality, and financial performance.
• Develop relationships with sponsors to promote Biobank services.
• Report specimen-management metrics to support forecasting and decisions.
• Oversee specimen collection, processing, storage, annotation, shipping, and inventory.
• Manage cold-storage units and environmental-monitoring systems.
• Participate in rotating on-call schedule for environmental monitoring.
• Maintain CAP, FDA, NYSDOH, GCP, ICH compliance; ensure licenses.
• Lead SOP development and periodic audits, root-cause analyses, and corrective actions.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate Biobank staff and recruit as needed.
