Optum, a division of UnitedHealth Group, is seeking a Billing Representative to support patient accounts and deliver a high-quality financial experience. This national remote role involves reviewing AR, handling inbound calls, and ensuring timely collections while complying with HIPAA and policy standards.

The position is full-time, Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm with possible overtime. Training will occur during normal business hours; remote work requires a private workspace and secure access.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • 1+ years of experience in medical collections and billing.
  • Experience assisting patients in understanding their financial responsibility, insurance coverage, benefits, out-of-pocket costs, and/or any other billing-related inquiries.
  • Knowledge of health insurance coverage and the ability to communicate patient financial responsibilities clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to read and interpret EOBs (Explanation of Benefits).
  • Ability to work full-time Monday - Friday; 8am–5pm; possible overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Handle inbound patient calls and outbound collections outreach.
  • Ensure timely and accurate follow-up on delinquent accounts.
  • Collaborate with onshore and offshore teams to drive account resolution within target timelines.
  • Analyze, document, and manage key accounts and escalations.
  • Identify trends or issues and elevate to leadership as needed.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to patients and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, payer, and company policies.
  • Process Account Receivable reviews and correction requests within defined turnaround times.
  • Support additional tasks and projects as assigned.

The Patient Pay Billing Representative plays a critical role within Optum, a division of UnitedHealth Group, supporting patient account resolution and delivering a high-quality financial experience. This role contributes directly to improving healthcare access and outcomes by ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant collection of patient balances.

This position is full-time Monday - Friday. Employees are required to have flexibility to work any of our shift schedules during our normal business hours of 8am - 5pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime.

This will be on the job training and the hours during training will be during normal business hours.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Review and prioritize open Accounts Receivable (AR) for patient collections

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Must be 18 years of age OR older
  • 1+ years of experience in medical collections and billing
  • Experience assisting patients in understanding their financial responsibility, insurance coverage, benefits, out-of-pocket costs, and/or any other billing-related inquiries
  • Knowledge of health insurance coverage and the ability to communicate patient financial responsibilities clearly and professionally

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1+ years of experience in pharmacy billing and collections
  • 1+ years of experience handling patient billing customer service (via phone, email, etc.)
  • Manufacturer Copay Assistance Programs or Patient Assistance Programs experience
  • Experience in Home Infusion and/or Specialty Pharmacy
  • Knowledge of NDC, ICD-10, HIPAA, and compliance regulations
  • Understanding of collections practices aligned with FDCPA guidelines
  • Experience in a call center or voice-based role
  • Experience handling patient medical collections, including follow-up and payment resolution
Telecommuting Requirements:
  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure (if applicable)
  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provides information privacy
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $18 - $32 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
