The Middlebury College Summer Russian School seeks a temporary Bilingual Assistant in Russian to support language immersion on campus in Vermont. You will work with students and faculty across academic and residential programs, providing language practice and administrative help during the 2022 session (June 19–August 20, 2022).

Responsibilities include serving as in-language point of contact, assisting with tutoring, coordinating events, and offering tech and communications support.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree strongly preferred. Advanced degree a plus.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Russian and English, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with people of all ages and levels (students, professionals, colleagues).
  • Must be willing to take initiative and work collaboratively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Program ambassador: be in-language contact and represent the School.*
  • Student life: supervise and mentor students in dorms and activities.*
  • Co-curricular: plan events and liaise with campus offices.*
  • Tutoring and pedagogy: provide tutoring and language support.
  • Technology: basic IT support for faculty, guests, and students.

The Middlebury College Summer Russian School is pleased to announcea vacancy for an appointment as a temporary Bilingual Assistant inRussian. The position is available during the summer 2022 session(June 19 - August 20, 2022), located on Middlebury College's campusin Vermont.

Essential to the functioning of each Language School, the BilingualSummer Staff member organizes and implements multiple facets of theacademic and non-academic operations of the School; provideslanguage, co-curricular, and residential support to students; worksalongside the School Coordinator and Director in the management ofSchool operations; and collaborates with Faculty in support ofstudents' language acquisition.

In addition to the salary, lodging and a complete meal plan will beprovided.

Responsibilities are grouped into 7 broad areas, beginning with themost essential. An "*" next to a responsibility means that allSummer Staff will be involved in this task.

(1) Program ambassador
  • Serves as primary in-language point of contact for students andfaculty. Knowledgeable about the program as well as campusresources and policies.*
  • Actively engages with students, providing linguistic practice,encouragement, and support outside of class, during meals andactivities and in the dorms, offices, and social spaces.*
  • Designs and implements team-building exercises for classes orprogram as a whole.
  • Supports students' commitment to the Language Pledge and therigorous learning environment.
  • Serves as official representative of the School, the LanguageSchools administration, and the Middlebury community.*
(2) Student life
  • Represents the School administration in the dorms and socialspaces, especially on evenings and weekends.*
  • Resides in dorms. Provides guidance and non-academic support.Monitors adherence to the Language Pledge. Organizes socialactivities in the dorms.*
  • Responds to student emergencies and urgent situations. Directsstudents to appropriate offices and resources, academic andnon-academic.*
(3) Co-curricular activities and events
  • Facilitates the School's cultural program, an integral part of theimmersion-based academic experience.Liaises with campus officesincluding but not limited to public safety, dining services, eventsmanagement, media services, print shop, theater, and facilitiesservices.*
  • Designs, plans, and implements complex school-wide cultural events.Designs and leads regular co-curricular activities.
  • Represents director by acting as host to official guests, includinglecturers, performers, visiting artists, etc.*
  • Assists faculty, guests, and the director at/with lectures,performances, and other events.*
  • Coordinates inter-school activities.
  • Attends program events as crowd managers and "animators"(enthusiastic leaders).*
(4) Tutoring and pedagogical support
  • Provides regular tutoring hours to assist students with homework,grammar, stylistics, pronunciation, etc.
  • Engages in conversation practice outside of class.*
  • Lecture series: gives presentation on an area of personalexpertise.
  • Assists with student testing.
(5) Technology
  • Provides general IT support for faculty, guests, and students (onSchool and personal devices).*
  • Provides curricular technology training and support forfaculty.
  • Manages circulation of School technology, equipment, and filmarchive.
  • Provides technical support at events, from basic a/v at lectures tosound and light design at staged performances.
  • Provides classroom technical support, as requested byfaculty.
(6) Communications
  • Communicates with students and faculty on a variety of platforms:email, website, social media, print media, announcements.*
  • Designs and edits web content, especially on instructionalin-language sites.
  • Develops media content and disseminates publications, includingcalendars, newspaper, posters, event programs, etc.
  • Manages photography and videography. Edits photo and video content.Prepares slideshows, photo exhibits, event videos, etc.
  • Translates School and other official Middlebury documents.*
(7) School office
  • Administers School office.
  • Serves as in-language point of contact for students, faculty, andguests needing drop-in assistance.
  • Scheduling of events and activities.
