Job summary

Alignment Research Center (ARC) in Berkeley is hiring a chief of staff to work closely with the executive director and lead hiring, governance, and operations to accelerate our research program. The role involves coordinating with leadership, shaping priorities, and scaling the organization as ARC grows.

The chief of staff will oversee the operations manager, help design processes, and contribute to fundraising and outreach efforts.

Qualifications

• Organized, conscientious, and effective at project management.
• A good communicator and collaborator with the director and with researchers.
• Able to work autonomously, set their own goals, proactively solve problems and flag when projects are off-track.
• A light technical background is a plus. You'll be involved in strategic discussions and would benefit from having a high-level understanding of our research agenda.
• Experience running hiring processes is a plus, since it is a major responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Hiring: Communicate with candidates to set up interviews and longer visits.
• Management and governance: Help design and run performance reviews, improve compensation policy, gather feedback, prepare board materials.
• Operations and the long tail: Manage the operations manager, plan offices, secure model access, support public engagement and fundraising initiatives.
