Job Summary
The Bench Hand – Deburring is responsible for removing burrs, sharp edges, flash, tool marks, and other surface imperfections from machined or fabricated parts. The role focuses on precise hand finishing to meet engineering drawings, work instructions, and quality standards while preserving dimensional integrity and required surface finishes. Work is performed primarily at a bench using hand tools and small power tools.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Deburr, blend, break edges, chamfer, polish, and finish metal (or other material) parts using hand tools and powered tools such as files, deburring knives, abrasive pads, pencil grinders, air-powered rotary tools, narrow-belt sanders, and similar equipment.
- Remove only the minimum material necessary so that edges, holes, slots, and contours meet specified radii or edge-break requirements without damaging critical dimensions or surface finish.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, routers, travelers, work instructions, and finish specifications to determine correct deburring methods and acceptance criteria.
- Visually inspect parts (with or without magnification) for burrs, nicks, scratches, and other nonconformities; perform in-process checks using basic measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, etc.) as required.
- Identify, segregate, and report nonconforming material; assist with first-article or quality checks when needed.
- Maintain accurate production and quality records; follow material traceability and documentation requirements.
- Keep the workbench, tools, and surrounding area clean, organized, and free of foreign object debris (FOD); follow 5S / 6S practices.
- Follow all safety rules, wear required PPE (eye protection, hearing protection, etc.), and report equipment issues or safety concerns promptly.
- Perform related duties such as light cleaning of parts, simple secondary operations, or support of other production areas as assigned.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by suggesting better methods, tooling, or process improvements.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Prior experience in deburring, bench finishing, grinding, or similar hand operations in a manufacturing environment preferred (entry-level candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn will be considered).
- Ability to read and understand basic blueprints, drawings, and work instructions.
- Good manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and attention to detail.
- Basic proficiency with hand measuring tools (calipers, micrometers) is desirable.
- Reliable attendance and ability to work in a team production environment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and meet quality and productivity standards.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand or sit at a workbench for extended periods.
- Frequent use of hands and arms for fine, repetitive tool work.
- Occasional lifting or handling of parts up to [25–50] lbs.
- Close visual attention; ability to work under magnification when required.
- Ability to wear PPE and work in a typical manufacturing environment (noise, metal dust/particulates, moderate temperatures).
Work Environment
Shop floor / manufacturing environment involving metalworking processes. Exposure to noise from power tools, airborne particulates, and typical industrial conditions. Safety glasses and other PPE are required.
