Job summary

Traverse City Area Public Schools seeks an At-Risk Instructional Assistant to support students with behavioral and emotional needs in the classroom, playground, and office. You will implement interventions and collaborate with staff to apply behavioral strategies under the Building Principal supervision.

Position is part-time for the 2026/27 school year (180 working days + 9 holidays) with daily 1.5 hours at Westwoods Elementary School in Traverse City.

Qualifications

• Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
• Previous experience working with children.
• Ability to follow directions and work independently.
• Ability to maintain records of student progress.
• Willingness to attend training.
• Physical ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Must be able to report regularly and maintain punctual attendance.
• Occasional collaboration with teachers and staff.

Responsibilities

• Assists student(s) with daily needs, ensuring sensitivity to the student’s needs.
• Assists with handling student behaviors, including de-escalation and interventions.
• Guides students and provides appropriate behavioral modeling in various settings.
• Provides behavioral interventions to assigned student(s) while assisting teachers and specialists with implementation of strategies and interventions.
• Takes part in planning meetings.
• Attends training or in-services.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
