Behavioral Health Technician (BHT)

About the Position
We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) to join our healthcare team. The Behavioral Health Technician will provide direct support to patients, help maintain a safe and therapeutic environment, and work closely with nurses and other clinical staff to support patients' behavioral health needs.
The ideal candidate is patient, attentive, professional, and comfortable working with individuals who may be experiencing behavioral, emotional, or mental health challenges.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct support and supervision to patients in a behavioral health setting.
- Monitor patient behavior and promptly report changes or concerns to nursing and clinical staff.
- Maintain a safe, clean, structured, and supportive environment.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living and routine needs as appropriate.
- Support therapeutic activities and structured programming.
- Use appropriate communication and de-escalation techniques when interacting with patients experiencing distress.
- Document patient observations, behaviors, incidents, and activities accurately and timely.
- Assist nursing staff with patient safety checks and other assigned duties.
- Follow all facility policies, procedures, safety guidelines, and confidentiality requirements.
- Maintain professional boundaries and treat every patient with dignity and respect.
- Communicate effectively with nurses, therapists, counselors, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established crisis and safety procedures.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience in behavioral health, healthcare, residential care, or a related field preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.
- Must be able to maintain patient confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred or required based on facility requirements.
- Additional behavioral health or crisis-intervention training is a plus.
Required Clearances & Training
Candidates may be required to successfully complete applicable facility and regulatory requirements, which may include:
- Required behavioral health/Article 9 training, as applicable.
- TB testing or clearance.
- Fingerprint/background clearance.
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Any additional training required by the facility or applicable regulations.
