Position Summary
Behavioral Health Technology, Float Pool – Olathe Hospital. Position requires a CNA license or at least 18 months of patient‑care technician experience.
Under the direct supervision of a nurse, the patient care tech (inpatient) is cross‑trained as a unit secretary and unit assistant/nurse tech. The role combines direct patient care with technical assistance to the nurse, and performs computer, clerical, scheduling and supply functions necessary for unit operation. The tech must have excellent communication skills, be self‑motivated, work independently and make decisions with limited supervision, and maintain calm in stressful situations. The tech follows organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform clinical and non‑clinical duties for admissions, transfers, and discharges including securing IV pumps, zeroing beds, and updating whiteboards.
- Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment by cleaning equipment, using infection‑control techniques, reporting damaged or malfunctioning equipment, changing sharps containers, keeping hallways clear, and wiping down desks and nurse stations; also clean whiteboard, strip bed, and store equipment per protocol.
- Maintain standards of care when completing and documenting daily duties such as hygiene, vital signs, nutritional assistance, weight/height, ambulation, fingerstick blood sugar, and intake/outflow measurements; accurately collect and label specimens and transport to lab as indicated.
- Make rounds on patients, answer call lights promptly, use excellent customer‑service techniques, and report any unusual incidents or changes in condition or behavior to appropriate staff while maintaining confidentiality.
- Introduce yourself to patients and families upon arrival, and communicate pertinent information to the nurse or shift coordinator in a timely manner.
- Use technology appropriately for data entry and security, accurately entering orders and charges into the computer system as appropriate.
- Manage your own time and that of others, prioritizing tasks and making appropriate decisions regarding patient care.
- Contribute to the plan of care under the nurse’s direction by following patient‑safety goals of fall risk and skin monitoring, and reinforce patient teaching.
Required Education And Experience
- High‑school graduate or GED, or currently enrolled in such a program.
- One of the following: Hold a CNA license or complete the Gold Standard Intern Program; have documentation of fundamentals of nursing courses; have at least 18 months of relevant patient‑care experience.
- Employees hired prior to 8/1/2025 are not required to be a high‑school graduate, have a GED, hold a CNA license, or complete the Gold Standard Intern Program.
Required Licensure And Certification
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) – American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days.
