The BH Licensed Clinician (BHLC) is responsible for providing mental health and substance use services at WakeMed through in-person and tele assessments. The BHLC conducts emergency psychiatric and substance use clinical assessments, diagnoses patients using DSM-5 and ICD-10 codes, offers crisis intervention/supportive counseling and social work interventions, and responds to ED BHRTs. The role focuses on diagnostic and functional evaluations, safety assessments, patient engagement, and support system effectiveness. The BHLC collaborates with a multidisciplinary team including physicians, psychiatry, and psychology staff, and makes decisions regarding patient disposition and level of care, including facilitating voluntary and involuntary commitments as directed by physicians. Additional responsibilities include diagnostic clarification, post-discharge treatment planning, high-risk behavior mitigation, and prevention planning. The clinician advises patients, families, and medical providers to enhance quality and continuum of care, participates in hospital and community initiatives addressing mental health and substance use, and provides expertise and education to the team. Maintaining knowledge of relevant behavioral health, medical, and legal issues impacting patients and the hospital system is essential. The role requires documentation according to departmental standards, independence, time management, flexibility, and conflict resolution skills.

Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist required. Certified Notary required within 1 year of hire.
Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Social Work required.
Minimum 2 years clinical experience in mental health or emergency department settings required.
