Job summary

Behavioral-Emotional- is seeking a part-time after-school assistant to support students with special needs in Downey Unified School District. Duties include direct instructional support, preparing materials, and assisting with classroom activities under supervision.

Hours: 1:30 pm–6:15 pm, Monday through Friday, at multiple district sites. Qualifications include a High School Diploma or equivalent; willingness to complete RBT training; ability to work with children and maintain confidentiality;

Job description

Position Type
  • Part-Time (Monday through Friday); Hours- 1:30 pm to 6:15 pm
Locations
  • Various locations within the Downey Unified School District
Responsibilities
  • Primary responsibility is direct support to students with special needs
  • Participate in activities planned by the after-school program staff
  • Assists in the preparation and development of instructional training activities and materials
  • Assists the after-school program staff with in-class activities based on specific instructions
  • Assists the after-school program staff in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom environment by keeping materials and equipment organized
  • Assists the after-school program staff in maintaining a good learning atmosphere by using effective teaching and behavior management techniques
  • Under direct supervision of the after-school program, staff may assist with assessing student needs
  • Provides the after-school program staff with general impressions and observations of students they work with
  • Works with students individually, in small groups, whole groups or learning centers planned by the after-school program staff and provides instruction to student
  • May assist with classroom technology, adaptive devices, and equipment
  • Assists with social skills
  • Assists with toileting, diapering, dressing, and hygiene
  • Keeps an organized and clutter-free restroom and/or changing area
  • Administers emergency treatment when necessary
  • May take children into the community
  • May assist children to feed themselves
  • May be assigned in more than one after-school program location
  • Assists with playground supervision
  • Works cooperatively with students, after-school program staff, district staff, and administration while performing assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Reinforces lessons/activities with small groups of learners
  • Assists after-school program staff in crisis intervention and discipline
  • Participates in program planning meetings at the request of the after-school program staff
  • Performs other job-related work as required
Qualifications

Experience
  • Recent experience in working with groups such as youth groups, child centers, or playgrounds and/or experience requiring organizational skills is desirable.
Education
  • Proof of High School Diploma or equivalency; or proof of an A.A. degree, 48 college units; or pass the Paraeducator Exam

  • Complete a mandatory Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT) Training (Provided)
  • Complete mandatory training as designated by BEAM
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or submit to weekly COVID-19 testing

  • Downey, CA: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
