Job description

Position Summary

The Behavior Technician (BT) provides direct Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services and behavioral interventions under the supervision of a Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) or other qualified clinical supervisor. The BT works directly with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (IDD), and co-occurring behavioral health conditions, supporting the implementation of individualized treatment plans to improve functional, behavioral, social, and communication skills. All services are delivered in accordance with North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) service definitions and The Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities
Direct Service Delivery
  • Implement individualized treatment plans and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) developed by the supervising LBA.
  • Provide ABA interventions in home, school, community, and clinical settings.
  • Collect, record, and maintain accurate data on client progress and behaviors.
  • Support skill development in communication, social interaction, self-care, and adaptive functioning.
  • Assist with crisis intervention and behavior de-escalation strategies as directed.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with LBAs, other Behavior Technicians, caregivers, teachers, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Participate in treatment planning meetings and staff debriefings as requested.
  • Provide feedback to supervisors on client progress, challenges, and intervention effectiveness.
  • Support family and caregiver training by modeling behavioral strategies.
Compliance & Documentation
  • Complete daily session notes, progress records, and data collection in accordance with NC DHHS, Medicaid, and TJC documentation standards.
  • Ensure service delivery is consistent with medical necessity requirements and payer guidelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality and safeguard Protected Health Information (PHI) in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Participate in audits, quality reviews, and accreditation surveys as requested.
Risk Management & Safety
  • Report all incidents, safety concerns, and sentinel events immediately per agency policy.
  • Follow crisis response and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Support infection prevention, medication safety, and other environment of care standards.
  • Promote a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment for all clients.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working with children or adults with ASD, IDD, or behavioral health needs.
  • Completion of all required NC DHHS training within mandated timelines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with clients and families.
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and person-centered care.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, Human Services, or related field.
  • Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) interventions.
  • Familiarity with NC Medicaid service definitions and electronic health record (EHR) systems.

  • Treatment Fidelity: Demonstrates accurate and consistent implementation of ABA protocols.

  • Safety: Timely reporting of incidents, with no significant compliance deficiencies in audits.
Working Conditions
  • Services may be delivered in home, school, community, or office settings.
  • Flexible schedule required, including evenings or weekends based on client/family needs.
  • May involve high-stress situations, crisis interventions, and behavioral escalations.
  • Moderate travel within service areas required (must maintain valid NC driver’s license and reliable transportation).
